While I sent hubby out for ice cream last night (good hubby, veeeery good hubby) I sat with both cats in the spare room with the door closed. I kinda had to herd them both in there and it was a bit of a process, but as soon as the three of us were in there, I picked Izzy up and let Emmy play around with the toys and mess with the window sill. When Izzy was calmed down, I sat down on the floor with her near the window where Emmy was. Izzy laid quietly in my lap for quite a while, long enough to leave paw prints on my legs (I was wearing shorts). She was purring on and off. I was very soothing to her, trying to get her to be comfy with Emmy around.
Emmy was VERY jealous that Izzy was getting attention and she wasn't. I kept tossing toys out for her with the arm that wasn't holding Izzy, but she was mad she wasn't the one in my lap. So I definitely think there's some mommy territorialness going on between these two. I'll keep spending quiet time in that room with both of them. It's no bother to me at all. And Izzy has been coming around a little more in the living room. I've been able to pet her while she walks by today, when the last couple of weeks she's just been spooking any time I move.
Emmy, I wish I had a treadmill for her. Little kitten has WAY more energy than I know what to do with. I'm trying to keep her entertained as much as possible but she's LITERALLY climbing the walls. I'm doing my best to ride out the kitten phase, but man, she's exhausting. I can't believe how much energy she has. I'm trying to get her to play fetch rather than just chase so we can have interactive playtime that involves her running as much as possible to tire her out but she's not quite got the hang of it yet. I think she gets too excited when I throw the toy for her brain to make the connection.
Ah well. It's getting better, though. Which is good. I love these little furballs, even when they drive me batty.

You're doing good, slvrwhispr, just be consistent and I'll bet everything falls into place as it should be
Yep, that kitten stage is the fun part, but enjoy it while you can because they grow up just too fast!

Wise words as always, Traci. And while we're on the subject of cats in small quarters: My adult grandson stayed with me while he was here to attend his cousin's wedding. He wound up sleeping in the living room because the bed I'd bought at Ikea for the "guest room" (ordinarily the kitty boys' playroom ) turned out to be uncomfortable... Anyway, Dylan says results of a recent study indicate cat "trees" and other high perches make indoor cats think their territory is larger than it is, and helps keep them happy...You're doing good, slvrwhispr, just be consistent and I'll bet everything falls into place as it should...

This makes sense to me. If I was sure I was staying in Austin, I would consider investing in a tree from PetsMart... but meantime am wondering if I could improvise: stick carpeting to the top of a file cabinet or whatever... My New Orleans house is not large, but it has 2 floors and a stairway... so I need something inexpensive that can be taken apart... Ideas, anyone?
