Goodbye Woof

Post by Tambrey »

A gal who does pet rescue on my SHE forums wrote this poem for a dog she could not save...I private messaged her and asked her permission, and received it, to post her poem over here:
StarfishSaving wrote:There's a little dog in heaven
Who wasn't there the day before.
His family let him roam unleashed,
So he could go explore.

His name was Woof, his eyes were bright
There was so much for him to learn
But little did he know
What danger lurked about that turn.

I'm sure he felt so happy
When he wandered off this time
He could not have known that
No truck stops on a dime.

I saw this dog and ran to him,
Lying in the snow, alive
But nothing I could do for him
Could save his precious life.

Poor Woof was frozen, hurt inside
His owners didn't keep him tied and
He crossed the street, or, well, he tried.
But I found him right before he died.

There's a little dog in Heaven who
Should not have died this way.
If they'd only kept an eye on him
He'd still be here today.

~*If you light candles, please light one for Woof to show him the way to the Rainbow Bridge. I didn't know this beautiful cattle dog boy, I found him on the side of the road after he'd been hit by a car. He was in shock and hypothermic, and died shortly after from internal bleeding because his owners (who we found as we were preparing to take him to the vet) let him roam free just 10 yards from a road. It can happen to any pet, don't think yours are immune because they've never gone near the road before. Please confine your dogs and cats so someone like me doesn't have to find them like Woof.*~
And this was also in the private message she sent back to me, giving me permission:
StarfishSaving wrote:Yes, you can. I also pray that this family learns from their mistake and does not subject another dog to this fate. I fear it's the case as the woman said to me "I don't usually get attached like I did to this one because every time I do, they get killed."

Ugh. He didn't "get killed." He was killed through negligence because she wasn't watching him and he was loose running around. It was very upsetting for me to have my hands on a dog that I couldn't help because he was owned- usually I am glad to find the owner but this time, it interfered with saving his life.
And here is the website she has set up for her rescue:

How very sad and tragic, and unfortunately, happens all too often for too many innocent pets. If ONLY people would be responsible for their babies!!

Thank you for sharing the lovely poem, I'm sure that wasn't easy for her to write.....((((HUGS))))

This is so sad and so unnecessary.

It's so painful to lose your furbabies. But at least if you, as a pet parent, try to protect them from dangers in the outside world or in your home, at least you don't have the burden of that guilt, when they leave.

No one living anywhere near a road or highway should take the chance of letting their furbabies run loose.

((((Hugs)))) to sweet, little Woof and happy journey to the Rainbow Bridge. I'm sure my Sparky and the other beloved angels will be there to greet and play with you.

((((Hugs)))) also to your friend, Tambrey, who tried so hard to save the little guy.

And thank you, Starfish, for the wonderful, unselfish work you are doing. I know the animals are grateful.

And besides your current "foster kids", you have many furbabies of your own to care for. :D

The world could use more people like you!

And that is just the cats!

Thank you, Sue. I contend that it's VERY selfish work- this is all I want to do in life! So, it's what I do! :)
