Heimlich For Your Cat

Post by Sonique »

Hey guys, I'm sure we've all heard about that terrible story down in Texas where the couple was rushing their poodle who was choking to the hospital and got pulled over by that heartless cop. If you didn't hear the couple begged and pleaded for the cop to help them but instead he insulted them, asked them what drugs they were on and took 20 minutes to give them a ticket while their dog died in the car :(

Anyway I know in an interview the couple said they tried to reach down the dog's throat to dislodge what as in there but only caused it to throw up. I can't help but think that ... first of all, I'm almost afraid of taking any of my animals to the emergency vet now because of the event in Texas. I guess what I want to know is, is there a good way to do the Heimlich on a cat? I know it's probably not recommended, but if the knowledge can help save my cat if this ever happens, it'd be worth it.

I'm not even going to expound on this because it simply would never be recommended, there are too many risks involved for too many inexperienced owners. Simple answer, NO, and it would be best to call ER vet and have the vet talk you through any first aid measures while you're ENROUTE to the ER vet (that is, while someone else is driving).

Sonique: Please see my post on the Other Room board.

BTW: My beautiful German shepherd dog `Eowyn of Colmar (sweet Winnie) died suddenly, horribly, of a totally unexpected seizure, here in my DD's Austin home, a few weeks after Katrina... so I DO know what I am talking about, okay?

Fair enough, it just got me worried you know :(
But I looked it up and it turns out we're only about two miles away from the emergency vet. I didn't realize that when I made this post and now I feel kinda dumb for making it
But I saved their number in my phone just in case. Hopefully I'll never have to use it.

It is good that an emergency vet hospital has been located. We have one too, plus regular vet clinics. My point in mentioning my dog's death was that in SOME emergency situations there is no time for obtaining professional help (believe me, Nan TRIED) ... and IMO blaming others for something that was inevitable is reprehensible.
