Neutering question

Post by Tambrey »

Is it "normal" these days to leave a male what seems to be partially intact?

My older males have NOTHING to show from the rear....but when Tripod was neutered this last week, by the fresh out of vet school doctor....unless I knew that he had been neutered, I would sure not know it to LOOK at him from behind....he seems to still have his sac, though not quite as large as before....sorry for lack of a better way to describe what I am seeing!!

Are they just more or less doing a vasectomy now and leaving all the parts there?!?! Or did he just not do it right?!

Should I ask them to do it again and do it right....or is this how it is done now? Will he be spraying all over once he has healed? I am planning on him being indoor only and do not need him marking his territory if he was not totally neutered and things were still left behind!!

Good question because when my Simon was done a few years ago, he's shriveled down to nothing. Jackson was done just a few months ago and it still seems like he's carrying. It could just be the coloring on Jackson and the fact that right there, in that spot, he's black, while the rest of his is grayish brown. Simon is orange.

Being it was just done, could it be possible he's still swollen? I'd give a call and ask if the procedure was done a different way.

I recently had a dog neutered. The vet usually leaved the skin of the sac for his method. It shrinks some when the swelling decreases, but is still evident.

As early as the 1980s at least, some highly qualified DMVs were advising and performing leave-the-sac neutering: as I understand it, the thinking is that this is not only less invasive than the relatively simple "snip-snip" castration - and therefore safer - but is more aesthetically attractive. The leave-the-sac method IS a complete neutering; the sac will tend to atrophy as time goes on.

And yes, it does seem recently trained vets are more likely to use this method, especially when the cat has a private owner, while "TNR" and rehome/adoption groups may stay with the older method because it is quicker and easier.

Thanks for the replies.....the vet that always did it before was of the old school, so all of my other male cats, as I said, have nothing to show...but Tripod sure does not even look neutered, so I wanted to verify how they do things these days....

ON the up side, Tripod is coming out from behind the toilet more often when we are in there, and of course when we are not, he is out because the litterbox is in use, and food and water dishes are emptied...actually, he is another one who is going to like water sports.....the water dish is drug all over the floor and puddles everywhere

Yes it's normal, and this procedure is done to minimize bleeding, since the incision is so small it doesn't often require suturing. What occurs is that each testicle is barely cut to reveal the vas deferens, which are pulled up and clamped, tied off, the cords cut, the tied knots them are replaced back into the scrotum....all with miniscule cuts, much less bleeding, and faster recovery.

TNR neuters are ALSO done this way. The procedure is much quicker and safer than removing the entire testicles.

Be sure to watch Tripod's incision carefully, because as with any surgical procedure, swelling, bleeding and infection can occur. You want him healed within 14 days, so it's going to take that long to monitor him that closely. Watch his appetite/drinking, activity level, overall health and behavior...anything unusual requires an immediate vet visit.

ok, I have a question...is there visually enough of a difference (eventually) so that a vet would know a cat has been neutered if the vet didn't have the cat's medical history?

Thanks Traci....his appetite and water intake...and output....is EXTREMELY well...his eyes and face are looking alot brighter and more relaxed...not so stressed....

the incision area looks fine...of course, there is still limited handling with him, but I get a good look when he is out and about....

I talked to the hospital.....it will be $350 and NO payments to do his leg...to amputate....*sighs*.....I know that is a reasonable fee...but alot when we don't have it....so will save as much as we can as fast as we can....if I can get my credit card paid off, I can do it that way...or if I get this job I applied for....I can do it with the first paycheck....so wish me luck on the job.....not that I want full time...but we need the income!

Mompaws, most vets can tell by feel, and of course, appearance. Also, a couple other things to notice are the face/head, and the urine, which is almost always stronger in an intact male. An intact male's face/head usually appear larger in proportion to the rest of the body (although this is not always the case)

Tambrey, you haven't had the surgeon's exam yet, so don't know if the leg can be saved or not, right?

Good luck on the new job, hope you get it!

No, he has not been in there....I just stopped in to get an estimate of costs.....of course, it could be less.....or more.....but that is a ballpark figure that they could give me based on what I told them.....

They DO have onsight lab, x-rays, technicians and an ortho surgeon, so all could and would be done right at that same hospital....
