feline urolithiasis and diet issues

Post by kristyn »

Hi all! I'm glad I found this board! It seems to be an excellent community! I have 4 cats (3 female, 1 male.. we didn't plan to have this many! But we love them all). The male cat has feline urolithiasis, and was castrated before we adopted him (for his safety of course). :) Since we've had him, we have fed him only food low in magnesium: feline CD's for awhile, and them switched to a Purina brand food, cause it was cheaper. This used to be a big pain during feeding time, as we had to babysit the cats while they ate so they didn't get each other's food. We eventully decided to buy a few food dispensers, and filled them with the low magnesium cat food. Our cats used to be neurotic about their food (perhaps since feeding time was so short... we had to put uneaten food away so the male cat would not get sick), and having the dispensers out constantly instead of at set times seems to have stopped the neurotic behavior. However, I have a few concerns about the female cats' diets. Is low magnesium food appropriate for our non afflicted cats? Also, I was thinking of purchasing some sort of multivitamin for our cats... something liquid that I can put in their food. Does anyone know of a good multivitamin that I can safely use for all of my cats?

I really appriciate all the help! :)

If your kitty has a history of FLUTD, it truly is best to keep him on a prescription diet (i.e., the C/D-s)...also, your other cats can eat it as well, you might just want to monitor their weights more often. Urolithiasis can reoccur at any time, and any kitty who has had problems at least once or twice, may be more at risk for reoccurance.

Ask your vet about the supplement issue. I never recommend supplements unless in case of illness or unless necessitated by a deficiency. Your vet knows the health histories of your cats better than anyone, only he should advise you on supplements.
