Help! Khanada ate some ivy!!

Post by Tina B and crew »

I understand english ivy can be toxic to cats...I just caught Khanada chewing on a plant that was given to my daughter as a gift...it's sat on the table for two weeks with nary a cat bothering it but I guess I was too slow with breakfast this morning. I think she only chewed off one leaf and part of another. What should I watch for? Typical gastrointestinal symptoms? Should I do anything now or should I just keep an eye on her? Our vet is closed this week, but I do have access to a 24 hour emergency clinic if needed.

I just knew I should have moved that stuff to a place she couldn't get it

FYI...I went ahead and called the ER vet...I'm on hold with them right now. Will let you know what they say (they are having their other location check the toxicology)

don't think you have a problem but let us know what the ER vet says...never ever saw a case of ivy intoxication...just a lot of salivating...

i gotta git but if you get no answer try burning some toast and then scrape off the burn part into a bowl of milk and see if she will drink it...doublt that it will happen but that will get a little charcoal into the gut...still don't think you have a problem though

ER vet said to induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide then give charcoal. One dose of hp already administered and we are waiting for her to vomit.

My inuition tells me the same davet...I don't think we have a problem either, but that ivy is going

2 more doses of hp and nothing...it's been more than two hours since she ate the stuff and she is showing no symptoms of being ill...no vomiting with the peroxide. Going to call the vet that is next door to our regular vet next and see what the next course of action should be. Wondering if we should administer charcoal since she hasn't vomited??

Good luck with the kitty. Let us know how she does. I do not know whether english ivy is toxic or not but fyi it is an alien, invasive weed even tho lots of people like it and with nostalagia think of it as part of a "home". (If you live in the south, think kuduz even tho ivy is not as bad as kudzu, nothing much is.) If I were you, I would pitch--certainly do not plant it in your yard unless you are going to tend it very carefully or wish to have lots and lots of it and do your part for environmental decline.

Helen (we have a BIG problem with english ivy here, especially when it goes up trees or it planted in a forest and cannot be maintained).

thanks for the well wishes...I posted an update in a seperate thread.

Helen...the ivy won't be planted outside...someone gave it to my daughter when she graduated...she was planning on using it to add some greenery to her dorm room. I promptly placed it on the front porch, which the cats have no access to, yesterday. I never have plants in my house and I'm not sure what I was thinking by not having this in a place the cats couldn't reach. Guess things have just been so hectic I didn't think
