neutering

Post by lmd »

I`ve talked a friend into having a nearly 2 year old male neutered. Now the vet offices that were checked told her that they can vaccinate at the same time, and save an office call. I said no, since the vaccs aren`t even due right now, just get the surgery done first. Any help to give her advice would be appreciated. Also, the vet office recommended a 12 monthly pill that gets everything. What is that? And is it sensible?

Is the friend in the US or elsewhere?

When are the vaccinations due? If they are due in just a few short months, there's no reason they can't be given now, and there's no reason they can't be given when under anesthesia. (unless the dog has had prior reactions, then the vet would want to monitor)

"gets everything", as in? (i.e., parasitic control or?)

Well, the gets everything is supposed to get all parasites and prevent heartworm. Yes, the vaccinations are due soon - June or July. Thanks for the info.

Well, several canine parasitic products can target several parasites, most commonly a product can target tapes, rounds, hooks and act as heartworm preventative.

Can you just clarify, the "12 monthly pill": do you mean, one pill to be given monthly for 12 months, or a pill that is given only once a year? The latter is virtually impossible (and I don't know of a product that does this) to address parasites in a dog who is assumably allowed outdoors.
