Roundworm?

Post by LisaK »

I believe this is a roundworm, but I want to be sure. My cat just threw it up along with a hairball.Image
She threw up a worm in Sept 01 and I treated her (I think it was Drontal?) and she does not go outside or eat mice or anything, so how does this happen? She DOES share a litter box with my other cat who likes to lay on the deck and once in a while walks on the dirt. Is it possible she was not cured of them in '01 and has had them all along?

Yep, that's a roundworm....if you treated with droncit, that won't target roundworms. Droncit is for tapeworms....you need Strongid-T for roundworms or hookworms. Usually, two doses, 14 days apart.

Wanna hear something funny? This vet I took Tawnee to was not the vet that I had been going to for years and years - it was a new person. I brought the worm in with me (back in Sept '01) and I asked if it was a roundworm. It was dried out in the baggie, but she looked at it and said she thought it was a tape worm. I said, I didn't think so - I think it's a round. She wouldn't even go and look at it under their microscope or anything, just kept insisting it was a tape. The medication on my invoice says "Drontal Feline" (?). So is Drontal the same as Droncit? After this little incident, I returned to my regular vet only. I trust him - I didn't trust them. If it IS the same then my cat has been harboring these roundworms for two years??? That is horrible!

Sheesh, what incompetants! Tapeworms can be that long, and even longer once they get bunched up in the intestines....BUT, the way to differentiate them is by looking for segments, they detach once passed from the body (which gives them the appearance of a grain of rice). Roundworms aren't segmented, and you correctly identified it. As for her having them all this time, maybe not. She could have transmitted it from the litterbox....and tapes can be passed of course, by fleas.

Yes, drontal is the same as droncit. This time, ask for Strongid-T  ...it's a pale yellow oral suspension given by syringe, two doses, 14 days apart, and you might want to do the same for your other kitty.

Ok, then I have to bring her in to be given the Strongid, right? I can't just pick up a pill or liquid?

picking up pills depends on your vet but if you brought that thing to me, i sure would say round worm and dispense if you were a regular client...if not a client then i couldn't dispense without seeing the dog...but a reg client could just pick up the med.....but we are all different.

Well, as Davet said, if you have a good standing relationship with your vet, you may be able to simply pick it up if you call beforehand. As with any medication, it must be dosed on weight, so if you can get an accurate weight on her and your other kitty, your vet may dispense it for both cats and you could probably pick it up.

Yes, it is liquid....oral suspension=liquid. You can keep the second dose in a capped syringe in a cool, dry place (not the fridge) until you repeat the dosage in 14 days.

Thanks, my cat was just at the vet on Monday for a physical and blood chemistry profile. I'll call tomorrow and see what I have to do.

one little addendum...when ever i would keep a pet to worm it for tapes, i would save the expelled tapes in case the owner wanted to see theml..when they did i would bring one out and hold it up..would be up to at least 6 feet long..in fact i think every grade school's biology class in the area has a formalin packet of worms of all types from my office..it interest when i used to speak to these kids, i would bring bio examples, ie heart worms, hearts etc etc...they would all write me letters stating very interesting to gross to i couldn't eat my luch to i wanna be a veterinarian now...was fun

Chloe and Roundworm Treatment

Post by Mona »

After seeing the roundworm Ech!! I am wondering if Chloe should be treated another time. The vet gave her a dose at 8 weeks of the Strongid, does she need anothe treatment. None were seen, but deworming as a precautionary measure can be transmitted through mother, even placenta as I was told. Anyway, should I ask for a second dose.

Thanks, Mona and Chloe
