need help with a behavior problem (biting)
need help with a behavior problem (biting)
I have a foster cat (Bonnie). She came to me as a pregnant outside cat. She has come a long way in the friendly department. (she has been here a bit over 2 months) Here is her problem (the one that might prevent her from finding a home). She bites when she gets excited. Not viciuosly. It is usually when she plays or after you've pet her for a while. I have been telling her "NO biting" and getting my hand away from her. But I want to be able to teach her NOT to do this so that when she goes to a new home she doesn't get returned with the lable "NASTY". HELP
Re: need help with a behavior problem (biting)
i dont have alot of experience with biting behaviors, but i have a rough and tumble boy that needs discipline from time to time and what i do seems to help.
if he is being too rough with my princess (his girlfriend), i immediatly pick him up in quick motion (not too rough, just enough so he gets the point that i am not petting him) and place him in the smallest room in the house and close the door. he stays there for at least 15 minutes and at most 30 minutes. if i need to repeat this in one day, litter and water get placed in there and he stays for at least 2 hours.
it took about 2 weeks of doing this for him to start altering his behavior on his own. sometimes, when he can tell he is in trouble for being too rough, he will immediatly run to the small room on his own (this of course make further disciple nearly impossible...just too cute!).
i have tried small squirts of water, but in my expereince the end result was not very productive...not with him at least...he's too tough for that.
