Traci- posting for someone else

Post by MA »

They aren't able to join your forums keep getting an error message, so I told them I would post for them.....

Damita was born on our place to a feral. Lived outside for 5 years. At some point had such a severe URI she almost died....we think this caused her to go blind. Brougth her inside, got her spayed/vaccianted/tested in Feb of 2005. Born summer of 2000.

She got ringworm, it kept re-occuring, 6 or so times.

She's had multiple URIs from a simple change in weather.

Was vomiting frequently, also had loose stools.

Urine pH off the charts (above 9.0), yet no crystals, no UTI

Late Jan of this year, couldn't/wouldn't walk on one front paw....a month later, it was like her whole right side was dragging. Initially, she would step down on her paw & it would simply crumple underneath her.

2 months later, she won't jump up/down....doesn't play anymore

At first, vet suspected food allergies. She continued to vomit while on Rx allergy diets. She's had more blood panels than I can count, will be doing another this week. FIV/FeLV negative dozens of times. With the paw, initially it was suspected it was nerve damage, then we moved to a stroke, now we've moved to a soft tissue injury (which, if it was, it should've healed by now). The vet is basically stumped. He honestly has no clue what's wrong, yet again.

She's been checked for diabetes, blood panels all the time, urine samples, stool samples, etc. He wonders if she has IBD....but whatever it is, she is on Prednisone every other day, I recently bumped her from 1/2 a pill to a whole pill.

Would have to know more details....dates of bloodwork done, how many times, what bloodwork exactly, what other diagnostics, and most importantly, did the owner ever seek another opinion, preferrably from a feline-only vet or one more qualified?

Too many multiple problems going on to narrow down and no specific time frame between health problems, what the vet did to address etc. (i.e., ringworm reocurrance suggests treatment was incorrect, ceased prematurely, or was not given appropriately.....urine pH that high suggests lab error or mishandling etc ....reoccuring URI's suggest either herpesvirus or some other problems not specific to URI, such as sinus polyps, mycobacterial infection, possibly even oral or eye problems....possibly immunological condition going undetected...just examples, need more detailed information)

If the owner took it upon themself to increase the prednisone dosage, the vet must be notified at once. This is NOT a medication that can be altered by the owner, the vet MUST evaluate and make adjustments, NOT the owner. Serious risks can occur when increases or decreases are done without vet supervision and re-evaluating bloodwork.

Also, please PM me with the exact "error messages" they kept getting when attempting to register, I need to know what they were.

traci,

Here is her reply to your questions. You can email me if you rather and I will give you her email addy

The prednisone was increased with the vet's help, at his suggestion.

Urine samples were done in the vet clinic.

Rural area, there is no feline only vet, no other vet that will be of any assistance in the area. What would you advise looking for in a vet? (It will be at least a 3 hour trip, which will be hard in Damita, but I have to do something)

Ringworm, yes, treatment was incorrect the first time, only treated for 4 weeks not 6.

She has had issues with reactions to the ringworm meds, she would vomit within minutes after receiving them. We finally settled on Conofite cream only to treat it, and then I just left it alone to go away. The ringworm issue has been tied in with skin issues, she gets flaky skin on her tail (at the base and the tip) as well as on her ears.

Her ears is where the ringworm always occurred. No fungal culture was ever done to make sure it was really ringworm, I went by the vet's diagnosis upon examining her. He suspects a dry skin issue(like psoraisis), so I have been supplementing with fish oil.

The blood panel was the "extensive" one, a full blood panel. It's the panel they typically run for senior cats. Her first one was 2.5 years ago, most recently we did one in the very end of Jan or early Feb.

Not a whole lot of other tests have been run as the vet has no clue what to test her for. We did try several elimination diets food wise. Science Diet, of course. We tried Z/D, D/D, multiple flavors of each for at least 6 weeks each trial.

The exact error message was "Error scanning for proxies"
