renal failure

Post by janete »

Sweety is 18 years old female dsh. She is having fluids at home. Her phospharus is too high. I cannot give her aluminun hydrocloride because she is allergic to it.

Does anybody know if there is anything else that I can give to her?
Her vet said there isn't.

Tank you all,

How did you determine she is allergic to it? What are/were the symptoms that lead you to believe she's allergic to it?

Untreated high phosphorus can be disastrous, there are a couple other phosphorus binders your vet can try, and if her phosphorus is too above normal, she may require IV fluid therapy to correct it. Sub-q fluids are useful at home, but sometimes in acute crisis, IV fluids are better, and more effective.

Has she been tested for hyperthyroidism? Does she have hypertension? Does she have heart disease? What are her calcium levels? Are they too low? What are you feeding her?

If your vet isn't addressing this and simply saying she can't have a phosphorus binder, see a new vet immediately for a re-evaluation, and ask the new vet for the other types of phosphorus binders, it's crucial that hyperphosphatemia is treated immediately and effectively, otherwise it only worsens and causes kitty to be chronically ill, thereby exacerbating the CRF and making other treatment non-effective. Don't wait, see a NEW, more experienced or feline-only vet TODAY!!
