Help with my cat.

Post by blazico »

Hello,
I have two female cats. One is 4yrs and 6mnths and the other is 6yrs. I received the 4yr cat first, followed by the 4yr cat a year later. They are both spayed. To make a long story short, they never got along and always fight. They are outdoor/indoor cats and recently, my 6yr cat has been peeing on the sides of the carpets in my house. We have a litter box set up and both cats use it, as well as go outdoors. I noticed that the cats have been fighting a little more then normal, could this have anything to do with my cat peeing on the edges of my carpet. That she might be marking her territory somehow? Any suggestions on what to do because she is ruining my carpets and floor. Thanks! Micah

People on this board tend to advocate indoor only versus outdoor or indoor/outdoor for your cats. One of those reasons is that some territorial behaviors, such as peeing indoors, can potentially be caused by being allowed outdoors.

One of the most important things to do with any kind of peeing problems is to get the get to a vet and rule out problems like urinary tract infections. Peeing on things is one of the first/most common things cats do when they're sick or unhappy.

Both cats have been outdoor/indoor cats since we got them. This just started last two weeks. I thought it might be a urinary infection, but could this be territorial even though they are both females?? We have no other animals and there have been no major changes in environment or anything. The only thing I've noticed is it seems like they have been fighting more. Any other suggestions?

Get her to a vet to rule out the infection first.

BOTH cats should get exams from your vet, since one or both could have an underlying health condition, like urinary tract infection or something else entirely.

Cats may react to another cat who is ill. Unusual urination habits may develop in either cat.

Cats who are stressed: Unusual urination habits may develop because they are unhappy, ill, or stressed due to certain changes in the home, or due to certain incidents, including certain events/incidences occuring outdoors.

Cats who are allowed outdoors: Unusual urination habits may develop because cats will usually bring outdoor habits INDOORS, they make no distinction. And, cats can get scared of certain things outdoors, which can cause unusual urination habits INDOORS.

The first and foremost solution is getting them both to your vet for checkups and urinalysis for each cat to rule out urinary tract infection, etc.

The second and equally as important solution is keeping them Indoors ONLY, since from the beginning, they have each probably been trying to establish the alpha-female role, and that carries from outdoor behavior to indoor behavior. This may be one reason they haven't got along, because the can't establish a natural heirarchy. Indoors only is also safer for the cats, and they will be safer, healthier, happier indoors.

Third, check the link titled "Feline Introductions" at the top of this forum for help and tips on introducing cats. Even though much time has passed, the link can be helpful for owners who need to start over and re-introduce their cats appropriately.

A question about the link for feline introduction, where is it? You say it would be possible to re-introduce the cats?

At the top of the Feline Health forum as a sticky note.

Feline Introductions

Keep in mind, it's only a guide, and may be different for a different situation, but it's a good starting point. Some of the tips in the link may not apply to you (i.e., keeping them seperated for days)

Yes, they can be reintroduced. But I strongly suggest it only has a better chance if you start by keeping them indoors NOW.
