Shannon,

Post by Peg »

Hi,

Shannon's trip to the vet was very upsetting. Her ionised calcium level is high and one of the causes is Lymphoma which killed my cat Noodles. Has anyone had this happen to their cat? Shannon had the I-131 for thyroid and was on Calcitriol. Can that cause the ionosed calcium to rise too? I'm so upset I can't even think of losing Shannon after all she's been through. She deserves more time.

What is the level and how many times has it been checked within 4 weeks? Does Shannon have any clinical symptoms of illness? What was the phosphorus level? How are her renal values?

Have you ceased the calcitriol?

Shannon's had blood test last week when the levels were high and this week when the serum level was lower. Her Blood serum level is 12.2 and the ionised test was .05 over the normal. The vet who called night to calm me down said she feels the Calcitriol is to blame since Shannon is progressign so well.

Shannon is really doing great. I was stunned by this as I emailed how well she was doing two weeks ago. She has gained weight to 10.9 lbs. is eating well and climbing the furniture and her catnapper. Her last kidney levels went from 35 to 31 for BUN and the Creatinine went from 3.5 to 2.4. The vets were very pleased with her progress. The calcium thing cane up only last week. Her phosphorous levels are good since she is eating only the renal foods now. And her potassium is also normal.

It's good the phosphorus levels are good, these can alter when the calcium does. The absense of symptoms is also a good thing, but I'd continue to monitor the levels (including renal levels).

See your PM....

Peg, I can't say anything more than Traci already did but I will send hugs. I was asked to take the I-131 and refused it,(longer story) but I do deal with Graves Disease and surely understand what she went through and do hope that she recovers fully.

When did she have the RAI(I-131)? If it was recent she needs to have her levels checked to see if she will need Thyroid replacement therapy. Did they aim at destroying the entire gland or did they only try for a certain amount?

either way, hugs to you both.

I can't add anything as far as medical knowledge.

But I too wanted to send my very best wishes and hugs to you and Shannon.

You two certainly deserve a break! :) Please keep in touch, OK?

Hi, to all,

Sorry I've been gone a while but we've been dealing with issues. Shannon had the I-131 in January '07. I had it myself maybe 8 years ago. Shannon's thyroid and the secondary heart problem are gone but we inherited the pesky kidney problem and now the calcium. Shannon's PTH came back today normal and with the absense of symptoms, they are leaning toward the Calcitriol. They want me to put her back on it twice a week but triple the dose she took everyday. It amounts to about the same doseage. They will monitor her progress. Her last kidney values were good: BUN from 35 to 31 and Creatinine from 3.5 to 2.4. She is 10.10 lbs. very good for her. She was down to 8 lbs. during the thyroid problems. I would think if she had Lymphoma, she would be losing weight not gaining and not doing well with the kidneys either. Noodles lost weight long before he showed symptoms. Please kkep those prayers coming. We are greatful.
