Feral Cat...EYE
I just took in a feral kitten, it's eye is oozing (just one) is there anything I can do for it, or what might it be, I cant get to the vet for it until thursday.
Thanks
Thanks
Re: Feral Cat...EYE
Can you find a different vet to take it to earlier than Thursday?
What color is the oozing? Clear? white? brown? How old do you estimate the kitten to be?
I'd keep the kitten away from any other house animals you may have. Quarantine it in a warm and safe room and make some calls to get into a vet's office sooner than Thursday.

Re: Feral Cat...EYE
This can't wait until Thursday, it can barely wait until tomorrow!
Please, get this kitten to a vet first thing in the morning! If an upper respiratory infection is present, it can affect the entire body system and cause severe health problems. URI's cause congestion, infection, etc that can cause anorexia, fever, weight loss etc....all of which are detrimental to any kitten (or adult). If the eye is infected, there is always a risk of infection so severe, the eye could be lost and surgery required to remove it. If it isn't a URI, it could be a serious injury, and only a vet can determine that with a proper exam.
Do NOT wait, get kitten to a vet ASAP.

2nd everything Traci said, this kitten could lose the eye, or worse. I saw this happen to cats and kittens at a shelter I volunteered at. Please, PLEASE get this kitten to the vet asap, it can't wait.

Thank you all, I guess I will take tomorrow off to take this kitten to a vet, I never planned on having a kitten or cat, I never planned on a pet, Ive spent 55 dollars in one night just buying food and litter etc and I guess I will take him to the vet and pay more, wow, I hope this isnt a concurrent expense.
PS: the ooze is clear, liquid and his eye kinda squints, but this morning he wasnt squinting.
Thanks again

hopefully a round of antibiotics will clear it up, and they are not that expensive....but only the vet will be able to tell for sure what is going on....
However, you will also want to get your kitten dewormed, after the round of antibiotics...you do NOT want to do both to the kitty at once!!
You will also want to get vaccines when age appropriate, as well as spayed/neutered...
An animal is a lifetime commitment...and with that come expenses....it is just a fact of being owned by animals!!

Lewis, I'm so glad you're taking your kitten to the vet. I understand that having animals means responsibility and health care, just like having a child. However, animals give us unconditional love and so much joy, and it's well worth looking after them and making sure they are not sick and suffering. Some people spend lots of money on shoes, clothes, fancy restaurants and other stuff - it's about priorities and balance, and I could not live with myself knowing I'd just spent money on leisure when my cat was in need of veterinary care. It's very rewarding having animal companions, and I have no regrets about my priorities. Good luck with your kitten, please let us know how he is doing.lewismadmax wrote:Thank you all, I guess I will take tomorrow off to take this kitten to a vet, I never planned on having a kitten or cat, I never planned on a pet, Ive spent 55 dollars in one night just buying food and litter etc and I guess I will take him to the vet and pay more, wow, I hope this isnt a concurrent expense.

Lewis, kitties are a big responsibility and when they get sick you have to be prepared. If you are not ready for that then you might want to find another home once you have nursed this one back to health.
Initially the exam/testing/vaccines/antibiotics/and what ever they will do to figure out what is wrong with eye will be what will be done at first. then every year you will have to get her shots, if her tests were negative then you don't have to retest unless the dr. wants to retest sinceshe was a stray. Again up to him and his protocol.
I do hope she does not come back positive for anything but if she does please let us know. Some tests are not as accurate and further tests should be done in order to confirm any positive results.
Please let us know since today is Thursday and you would have taken her yesterday. Good luck
I do hope it was simple and just antibiotics will clear it up. (praying)

Re: Feral Cat...EYE
Also having kitty on a good quality cat food is important. You might think it is too expensive BUT in the long run it isn't. Cheap kitty food brings on urinary tract infections and other stuff that will land kitty in hospital , maybe not right away but in the future. So good quality kitty food is so important now and throughout her life.
