Poor Baxter.. Sick again!

Post by drunkmike »

Well his mild sneezing went away for a few days and he seemed to be back to normal so I left everything alone. Last night he sneezed a few times, but it didn't' seem to faze him and his eyes were clear, no runny nose so I figured he might have had something in his nose. Well he sneezed about 5 times in a row this morning so I got up, turned the lights on and he had like a tear running out of one of his eyes and his nose was pretty wet. Right now the poor guy is laying next to me on his blanket and is pretty zonked out. Do you think he just has a little cold? I am awaiting the vet to call me back and see if he can fit him in somewhere on Monday (the earliest) since the whole fiasco last weekend. Hopefully he can be seen and I can get this poor thing back to a normal life again. What do you all think? It was like a tear running down his face.. it wasnt goopy or anything so I'm guessing his eye was just watering from all the sneezing. And I also figured that since he was in that hospital overnight it is very possible for him to have picked up a URI or something.

Call your regular vet AND the ER vet you saw last week, and inform them Baxter is sneezing, see if they will prescribe a short course of antibiotics to start today, they might not require you bring Baxter in today, but if they do, it wouldn't hurt to get him seen. He should also have his temp taken. If you call ASAP, you could probably just pick up the antibiotics, before they close.

Is he eating and drinking normally?

He seems to be eating and drinking normally. I was gone for most of yesterday so I did not physically see him eat or drink anything, but he is a free eater so he picks at his bowl little by little all day. I was just about to go and refill both of them with fresh water and food for the day so I will keep an eye on it. He is a bit sleepy right now but does get up and walk around to see whats going on every once in a while.

What type of antibiotics should I ask for? The clidmacil or whatever it is called? I don't know if they will even prescribe without seeing him.

No, clindamycin isn't necessary. It would probably be clavamox, or, if he's super-sensitive to GI tract upset, then amoxicillin. Since the ER just saw him, they may not require and exam but call and see.

Clavamox is what we always get for ours...they take it (fairly) well when we need to give it to someone...and it actually smells like it does not taste TOO bad....

the vet we had years ago (died on New years Eve about 10 years ago) would TASTE everything he ever gave to an animal, because "if it does not taste good, they will fight taking it"

I found that out when he wanted to give my dog something new for an infection, he handed me the tube, then said wait and pulled it back, squeezed a minute amount on his finger and licked it...then gave it to me and said, "Yep, he should take it with no problem!"

Hope it is nothing serious with Baxter

What would the Clindamycin be for then? I know they gave it to him when I first got him home after his first vet visit.. Hmm.

BTW they did fit me in between appts they had scheduled early Monday morning. Doc said that after the whole fiasco last weekend he did not want to give anything without seeing him. They want to be super careful with everything from here on out with giving meds and shots.

Clindamycin is usually used for wounds, abcesses and dental problems (i.e, extractions, oral infections), strep and staph.
