New Kitten

Post by glc1133 »

I have a wonderful 17 week old kitten (Phoenix) we have bonded without any problems!!! The problem is my children go back and forth between my house and their dad's a week at a time. Phoenix does not seem to be handling this well. She is now hissing at both of my children, who are 16 and 13 years old so I know they are not mis-treating her. It's almost as if she feels the kids are invading HER territory. And no, I am keeping the kids!!! ANY ADVICE???

I would get your kids involved with feeding her, providing her with water, even changing her litter pan.

Have them go into the room where she is and sit quietly on the floor and perhaps play just a few games of cards (quietly if they can) then just turn around and leave. The next day, have them do the same thing, but put treats out around them on the floor, and if she comes out, they are to ignore her, not look at her, just flat ignore her. When she eats a treat, have them get up and leave again still ignoring her.

Do this as often as you can and I guarantee you she will be crawling into their laps soon to demand they pet her!

I agree with the first reply- I have an abused cat I adopted eight years ago and he still gets nervous around my parents who he lived with during my years at college, but now when they visit my home they bring him a treat and talk to him...he actually comes out to see them when he hears their voice.
