Xray and ultrasound would probably reveal more...could be a diaphragmatic hernia, punctured organ, leakage from the GI tract (chyle, infection), congenital heart defect, abcesses on a certain organ, etc. If there IS fluid, then the vet needs to find out where it's coming from....xray or ultrasound are useful for this. Also, aspirating the fluid if possible and testing it under slide exam or cytology would be helpful.

Did your kitten suffer a fall, get attacked by another animal, get mishandled by someone or a child, trapped in something, or allowed outdoors where he could have been hit by a car, etc?? These are all things that need to be ruled out immediately.

This kitten has an interesting history.
His mama was a feral cat, and Chester and his sibs were found by a man when they were about a day old, their mother dead beside them. Joe bottle fed all four babies, had them checked and given their first shots.
We got Chester when he was 8 weeks old, mid September, and since then he's been indoors only.
We have a small dog, a five pound toy poodle that gets along great with the kitten. They play chase, but don't really get rough. There are no children in our home. He's not had any injury that we're aware of, unless something happened while we weren't home, and there's been no indication of that, and he's never acted like his tummy was sensitive.
The Vet did say that his heart sounds good and strong...

what about worms? have you seen any? did vet do a fecal recently like while he's there? If i recall coccidia doesnt cause worms in stool so a sample would have to be looked at under the microscope.

sorry i have nothing more. Traci said it all but all i could think of was worms. sorry to be so simple. :( good luck
