cocobean wrote:My DDad's mobility assistance dog, Great Pyrenees, Justice, has a crepidous infection. This infection started as a puncture wound we believe is from rough housing with the other dogs while on "break time". It started to get crepidous and started "tunneling". The crepidous had spread up his back, hips, legs. He has been on 3 different antibiotics in the last 2 1/2 weeks. We found out Tuesday night that it had started into his chest and neck. Early this morning(Wednesday) he went into surgery and had 2 drains placed. They also closed up the "tunnel" that the infection had made. He is still on the 2 "hard-core" antibiotics, the same pain medication as before, and "bed ridden" He is not to go back to work at least until Monday after his follow up appointment with the vet that did his surgery. Even with the pain meds Justice is still in a lot of pain and has to be turned every few hours for the fluid to drain properly and so he doesn't get sores. This has been especially hard on DDad. He is very worried about Justice. And it hurts him to see him in so much pain and not be able to do anything about it.
I think she means Crepitus...not surePlease let it be known that this girl and her entire family are very good with their animals. Dogs are all vaccinated and taken well care of. she is assuming the dogs were playing and this happened.
Any other info would be greatly appreciated.
thank you

I think she means crepitus too, which means there is air or fluid somewhere.
Where on the body was the original wound? I really don't understand exactly what she is saying, other than it sounds like a very bad puncture wound that got necrotic (and caused systemic infection), and wasn't addressed properly in the beginning. The puncture might have been in a plueral space, thus causing air/fluid/infection and spread.
Meant to add, that if the vet is clueless, then of course, she needs to see a new vet, re-evaluate the wound, xray or open the wound to see how much damage has been done. Drain tubes aren't a bad thing, but proper wound care, flushing, proper antiibotic approach are critical. Necrotic tissues, if left undetected, can be deadly.
From what I am getting from her posts...the wound was around the back of the "ankle" on a front paw, if I remember right!!
I found this dated Wednesday October 17
We also have to take Justice to the vet today. The vet we use to go the own of it went bankrupt and we don't know where that vet went to. He was really good. It is so hard to find a good vet now-a-days. But some how Justice got a cut on the inside of his leg. And it looks like it might have just started to get infected and we want him to get looked at and get on some antibiotics just in case.
Well, this is really unusual, did the vet check for other puncture wounds, particularly around the neck/shoulders/chest?
What is the pain medication given? If the owner feels the dog is still in really bad pain, the vet needs to reconsider and opt for either a different pain protocol or adjust the dose. (do not advise owner do this on her own!)
OH Tam, thank you. I have been so busy I just couldnt find it.
Here is what she posted to me in a private message in response to what i wrote her....

Justice is being kept in a separte room away from the other dogs. And since I am here all day I stay in here with him to watch him. He has his own bed that he stays on.
The wound originally started in the flank area. Then had started to tunnel back towards his hip. It did not get into his abdom in or any other vital organs. The confirmed this with a scope and ultrasound.
Everything that is used near the wound is sterile and the site is sterilized several times a day with betadine. Before and after I do anything with Justice I wash my hands as well as wear gloves if I am in direct contact with the suture site.
We do trust this vet. I know that is it sometimes hard to find a good vet. But she is very throrough with Justice and will even be called at home if he were to have a status change or if we had questions about anything.ghcesz
Thank you for your prayers and concern.

she did mention on the regular forum that the vet prescribed a stronger pain med that will be gentle on hus tummy....but she did not say what it was....
and also, her dad....who is the person the dog services, is coming home early from work to help care for and be with Justice...so that will help Justice also....I am sure that being a service dog and trained to help a certain person is difficult on him as well....especialyl since his human is not with him like he is used to....
