MY CAT HAS A LARGE ROUND HARD OPEN WOUND ON HIS FLANK

Hi Hope you can help me. I have a black and white cat about two years old. Out of the blue he developed what looked like a nasty burn about the size3 of a large coin and within 48 hours its turned into a hard lump the about the size say of a human eyeball. There is an oozing liquid head. I have taken him to vet who tried to withdraw liquid but nothing came out.

I would welcome any ideas.

I have to ask, is he vet a competent vet or is he a large animal vet who has no business treating pets?

Get your kitty to a new, more experienced vet (small animal vet) or an emergency vet, immediately. This could be an abcess, but there would be beige or brown pus draining from the wound, and might be blood-tinted. If so, a fever might also be present.

Is it a cutebra? This is a worm caused by a bot fly, and appears as a gaping wound but one can usually visually see the worm or mucous-like substance, it can only be removed safely by a competent vet, must be aseptically cleaned and antibiotics given.

If it is red, blue or blackish or purplish, it could be a hematoma, or a tumor of some sort. If it is hard and aspirating does not release fluid, it could be a hematoma or sarcoma. See a more experienced vet IMMEDIATELY! The more it is manipulated, the more damage it can cause!!

Please don't tell me the vet just tried to empty it, didn't diagnose it as anything, and then sent your cat home? Because if so, that's definitely a woefully incompetent vet. :/

It makes me very sad how many vets don't know what they're doing. Our poor animals.

I would definitely look for another vet and hope for a better one.

Thanks for all your suggestions. The cat's swelling has gone totally down without any treatment. We have heard that there are a lot of hornets around and we reckon it was a hornets sting.

Um, you never took your poor cat to a vet?

Please, do right by your cat, and get him to a vet when things like this happen. Stings from insects CAN and ARE deadly in some cases, don't assume otherwise. You don't even know what it was, chances are unlikely it was a wasp.

Your kitty deserves proper veterinary care. And, I don't know if you're just lucky this time, or if your kitty has some other underlying problem that has not actually resolved, only a VET can determine that. NO lump or bump, or rash or wound should ever go unchecked by a vet, ever! Your kitty deserves veterinary care when needed!

Good Lord all this time and you never took him to see another Vet!? Shall I ask what illness you had that must have kept you bedridden that you didn't find another vet to deal with this properly? Wow! You are saying great things because you think the kitty is better. But you certainly would be kicking yourself if the kitty wasnt. YOu have no clue what it was that did that to your kitty, it is your responsibility to treat that kitty with respect and proper care. Not finding another vet was poor judgement. You don't know if that kitty is is was in pain during this time. Even if you can deal with your own pain animals depend on us to take care of that. Please find a real vet so that next time something like this happens you are better prepared.
