Purple "polyps" in kittie's ear

Post by bridget »

Hi! I haven't posted here for awhile but have checked in from time to time...now I have a problem I need help with.

One of my kitties, Georgie, has developed purple grape seed-like "polyps" in both of his ear canals. He only had one in his right ear when I took him to the vet to see what was happening when it began to bleed a bit. During the next week he developed a bunch of them in his left ear that were found at his recheck.

We have had them biopsied and it came back "hyperplasia" (I think) of the subaceus (don't think I spelled it right) glands.

We have tried: Animax, Revolution (in case there's a stray mite hanging around...he had no ear mites but we used it just to make sure), EnteDerm, Mometamax, Zymox with Hydrocortisone (currently using this every day), and he's had a DeproMedrol injection.

He's still having problems digging at his ears. He goes back to the vet next week for a check. The vet is stumped at what to do next and so is the other vet at her practice.

Please....if you have any information and suggestions for treatment please let me know. Poor Georgie......

Thank you!
((((HUGS))))

How often is he digging in his ear?
If his ears are open wounds well yes he will still scratch at them.
An almost maddening scratch as a matter of fact since healing causes itchiness.

Has the dr. not suggested that they be removed?
Are they so bad or so many that it is causing a blockage in the ear so he can't hear thus that is why he is scratching at it?

I am sure there will be better suggestions but for now this is all i have for ya.
Almost 7 years in remission from Graves disease and no meds!

Bridget, can you see a more experienced vet, preferrably feline-only vet? It sounds like surgery to remove them should probably be considered. But, you need a vet who's experienced in ear surgery for a consult first, you do NOT want an inexperienced vet doing surgery of this type unless it is warranted! Combined, a consideration for treating certain bacterial infection (need a culture), yeast, etc needs to be taken into consideration. Please see a qualified vet who can consult with you to determine the type of treatment/surgery to correct this. If surgery is warranted, you might be prepared that treatment may be lengthy following, but worth a try. In the meantime, an e-collar should be used to prevent him from scratching the ears.
