Gastric Ulcer

Post by Louis's Mum »

My vet thinks my Cat Louis (a beautiful 8 year old Burmese) has a gastric ulcer. I would like to get help from anyone whose cat has experienced this - especially with diet and medication.
We are getting referred to a specialist for a Gastroscopy which will cost around $1000 so until I can save that does anyone have dietary ideas to make him more comfortable. We have him on minced chicken breast at present. Thanks for any help!

I'd be a bit concerned about a diet of strictly minced chicken as it does not have all the proper nutrition kitty needs. Can you current vet not suggest or prescribe a gentle diet? I'm not sure what is available commercially but I'm sure Traci does. How long will it be before you can get the gastroscopy done? Are we talking weeks or months?

This was recommended by the vet as a starter diet, calling today to pick up referral to specialist in Sydney for gastroscopy and will get more details on a diet from him. Thanks for your post, he is quite perky today and strongly resisting being pilled - always a good sign!

What are/were the symptoms that prompted you to have Louis seen in the first place, and what diagnostics has the vet done to assume gastric ulcer? Was a full blood profile done? (all cats over the age of 7 should have full bloodwork/urinalysis/thyroid function testing done yearly or twice-yearly)

What medications does the vet currently have Louis on? Was he given or does he currently require sub-q fluids for dehydration? Did he mention pepcid or sucralfate? (prescribed only)

I assume your vet has referred you to a specialist, but is it because he suspects something else in which he is not equipped or experienced enough to diagnose? Have you sought a second opinion rather than opt or prepare for a gastroscopy? (preferrably by a feline-only vet)

If Louis is vomiting for instance, a bland prescription diet might help, like Hill's I/D, or even a prescription hypoallergenic diet. But, kidney and liver function and other blood parameters should be checked before prescribing any diet, particularly for long-term and for the condition treated.
