Poor Kibbers...
Poor Kibbers...
I have this cat (by the way I'm new to the site so HI!!!!) who was having diarrhea. So I took him to the vet and they told me he has roundworms and coccidia (we recently welcomed a new kitten into our home, and apparantly he brought some intestinal critters with him). I have been administering the medication just as I am supposed to. It's been...five days and he still has diarrhea, which they told me was normal. Today he vomited and I called my OTHER vet (I live on a military base and the base vet was closed) who is off base and they said he should be fine, and if he vomits again, to call them again. So about four more hours go by, and he vomits again, though not as much. So I call the vet again and they say bring him on in and they'll see what they can do for him. So I take him into the vet and they give him a Centrine injection (reduces vomiting) and told me to give him half a tab of the Centrine they gave me when I left twice a day.
So we're home now, but he's acting absolutely sick as...a dog. He wasn't even acting this sick the first time I took him to the vet. Is this a common side effect? Should I stop worrying? AGHHH!

Re: Poor Kibbers...
Is Centrine also a sedative, or a muscle relaxer of some sort?
Of course if he wasn't back to normal I would take him in!

Re: Poor Kibbers...
Centrine is similar in action to atropine...for this case, it is used as an antispasmotic agent, and has a multiple-use for diarrhea, gastritis, vomiting, nasea. Side effects wouldn't include sedation, but rather dry mouth, possible dry eyes/blurred vision, and hesitancy to urinate. The latter should be addressed immediately if it occurs.
My guess is kitty needs sub-q fluid support, if this wasn't done, it should be contemplated immediately. Frequent vomiting and diarrhea induce dehydration, and I'd be willing to bet kitty is severely dehydrated. With the side effects possible with the centrine, you don't want to risk further dehydration. Call an ER vet immediately for further instruction.
You didn't elaborate on "absolutely sick", but if you are referring to extreme lethargy, hiding, painful abdomen, fever or any other obvious sign of illness, don't wait to get him seen by an ER vet pronto, there could be a secondary infection or something else entirely going on. I really think sub-q fluids would be of great benefit to your kitty right now. Nutrition is also very important, feed a bland diet until the centrine dosing is ceased, or, talk to your vet for a temporary Rx diet until the crisis is over, maybe a fiber-related diet.

Re: Poor Kibbers...
The second he vomited (only one time) I called the vet and they said if he did it again, to call again. So I did when he did it again. The diarrhea wasn't dehydrating him, as the vet saw him on monday and his diarrhea was slowly progressing to solid stools, with ocassional bouts of diarrhea. The vet today said that he shouldn't vomit anymore (so far, so good). He did drink some water a bit ago, so I think he's slowly coming back into reality.
If he is lethargic in the morning I will take him to the ER vet.
I understand what you mean by the sub-q fluids, as doggies and kitties can become dehydrated very quickly. Thanks for the advice.

He's not lethargic, just worn out I think. The vet freaks him out. He was hissing and scratching the whole time they examined him today. You should have seen him when they gave him the injection. OUCH.

Assuming he's NOT lethargic NOW, right? Edit: posted too soon, didn't see your post, thanks for elaborating on that.
Again, don't hesitate if you feel he's failing since the centrine injection or from this point on....offer him as much water as he wants, he's probably going to be quite thirsty in the coming hours, and do watch his urination habits.
Btw, love the signature!

Absolutely, if he just isn't the same by morning we're headed to the ER vet. He already ate some food (not much, just nibbled a bit) and drank a bit of water. He's more alert now. He just saw the kitten run by and is staring at him like he wants to pounce heh.
I'm starting to get a bit more confident now since he looks better.
Hmm the blurry vision side effect explains why he was squinting at me. LOL.
As for my sig, I've got a separate vet bill at another clinic that I still need to pay off (over $300). When all else fails, write a bad check! HEH...

Re: Poor Kibbers...
Good news!
They're chasing each other around now (Kibbers and Oreo, the kitten). I'm so glad he feels better.
I'm still going to watch him closely...just in case.
