A friend mentioned that she used shredded paper for kitty litter, because clumping cat litter will cause cancer. Is this extreme, or just possible? Never heard of this before.

That's extreme.

If the cat spent unrealistic amounts of time in the litterbox and inhaled cat litter dust on a continual basis, then it may be possible to have some accumulation in the lungs. But, if that were the case, so would you.

Everything causes cancer. :P

It seems like there are very few things that haven't had studies that "suggest" a "possbility" of a "relation" to causing cancer. You just can't live in dread of it all.

I've never heard of that. I wish someone would invent a litter that wouldn't end up all over the floor though!!! We have a cat litter tray with a lip all around to prevent this but I think the cats kick it all over the place for fun

we use the pine pellets, anyone else? I like it, but then we scoop the second he poops around here! Otherwise even the urine smell is maksed by the pine smell. The worst problem is sawdust.

The first time I used the pine pellets, I put it into the litterboxes and was in bed for the next couple of weeks with pneumonia....
hubby nor son did anything much with the litterboxes, because they figured the pine pellets would just keep absorbing or somethign....anyways, when I went to clean the basement litterbox...I literally had a MOUNTAIN of sawdust...I could barely even SEE the litterbox...
we did not get that stuff again!!

not much is needed, just enough to cover the bottom of the pan, another reason I like it. The urine dissolves the pellets, we change the box when the pellets are mostly broken down.

I've been using wheat litter. It clumps, but it's biodegradable and natural, no icky chemicals for the kitty to pick up. It works really well and neutralizes the oder well too. I really like it.

I’ve never heard of the kitty litter causes cancer theory. My theory is that if you give a lab rat 1,000 times the normal dose of anything it will cause cancer, so leave the lab rat alone.
