Cat generation statistics

Post by E's »

As I posted on Admin Support, I was able to access the sidebar articles. However, for a serious controversy that does have to do with cat health I need right away that set of basic statistics re feline overpopulation: You know: the one that goes... If in an unregulated cat colony, one female cat matures @ age 6 months and has 2 litters per year, with an average of 6 kittens per litter, 3 of which will be female, which in turn will mature in 6 months and have litters.... statistically, how many new cats will there be and how many new generations in - say - 2 calendar years??

I could not find that one, but I did find this one:
Just allow two cats and their surviving offspring to breed for 10 years. In that time, you'll produce 80,399,780 cats (this assumes two litters per year and 2.8 surviving kittens per litter).

1. First year: 12
2. Second year: 66
3. Third year: 382
4. Fourth year: 2,201
5. Fifth year: 12,680
6. Sixth year: 73,041
7. Seventh year: 420,715
8. Eighth year: 2,423,316
9. Ninth year: 13,968,290
10. Tenth year: 80,399,780

I've read something like that before - it is quite shocking.

Where I live (in the Canary Islands) there are many strays. There is a current program though where the vets sterilise the strays and cut a small V in their ear to show they have been sterilised.

some of the larger cities do that here....TNR, or Trap-Neuter-Release...I have tried to talk to the "powers that be" in our big city to the south of us, but they say the vets are not interested in offering their time and services to do it, and the city cannot afford to pay it...

It is a great program!!

Thanks! Yes, we had TNR programs in Greater New Orleans preKatrina, and hope to get them working effectively again in our recovering communities. Meanwhile, there are small groups and individuals - well-meaning but misguided - still maintaining unregulated feeding stations, almost 2 years after such emergency action was needed. This has established growing colonies of feral and semi-feral cats - often inhabiting ruins... No TNR, no vaccinations or vet treatments for skin diseases and parasites... The food supply also attracts rats, raccoons, packs of stray dogs... Our animal rescue orgs are being overwhelmed.

It is hoped this statistical projection can help convince the people who stubbornly refuse to see they are creating more misery than they're solving... Thanks again - I will pass it on to my NOLA forums.

E I have nothing to add to what was already given to you about statistics but would like to give you my prayers regarding this and hope that the healing process for who were effected helps them and thank you for thinking of the animals and everyones health that is being effected by this misled mission. Hopefully the proper guidance can help all who are involved help create better conditions so that disease and overpopulation stops being spread.
