Kitten Injured by Vet? HELP

Post by Zitch »

I recently rescued a kitten from a bad situation and took her to the vet for worming and meds for badly infected eyes. When I told him she had recent diarreah, he took an instrument that I thought was WAY to big for a kitten to get a stool sample. He inserted it at least 2 inches, but I think more like 3. Afterwards, she became bloated. Its been 12 hours now and her stomach is still distended. Is it possible that he perforated her bowel? How will I know? Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My advice is get to an ER vet immediately, and ask for the records from the old vet (do not go back there). Go now to see if there is possibly an injure to your cat, get an xray done of the area affected.

Please let us know what happens. Good luck to you, and I hope it will be ok.

What was the instrument, was it metal or was it a long q-tip type? Did he even get a sample and test it? Did he proceed to deworm her and treat for URI?

Mona is right, get your kitten to an ER vet immediately on the offchance that damage to the colon was done. Unlikely, but don't take that risk. If deworming was done, the distended abdomen could be from the deworming meds, especially if she was sensitive to it. Don't wait to find out.

Posted once, but it apparently didn't 'go thro'. If you get this post twice, sorry. He used a plastic rod with an opening in the center, near, but not at the end. The end was 'pointy' but not sharp. Deworming was done and he found coccidiosis in the stool sample. Also had a temperature. No treatment for URI, but she's on a med for the coccidiosis. She has runny diarreah this am.

Read your reply about Coccidia

My vet used a similar plastic instrument, but only inserted a very small end of it into my kitten.

Coccidia can cause bloating and is serious enough to require multiple treatment. Keep kitty on the meds as directed, I went through this with my first cat Honeybun i the beginning. Make sure kitty eats and drinks, ask for some RX food if not eating and mix it up and syringe feed.

Good luck to you. Post updates. Mona, Chloe and Honeybun :)

just my humble opionin but the plastic ended pooper scooper is actually very wsafe and can be used even on the smallest animals, ie maybe not a mouse but kittens and i would doubt that a person could rupture a gut with it...i used one for 45 years and never had aproblem....i think there is some other cause of the bloating and problems but again an ER visti is called for--i woiuld go along with Mona's coccidia theory, that is more likely....

Mona, the kitten I posted about is MUCH improved! Her stool is not just pudding, eyes are better, and she even PLAYED today. The bloated tummy is coming from consumption of a LOT of water. Can't figure this out. She is on Albon for coccidiosis. Would the med make her thirsty. She drank yesterday like she hadn't had water for days. Other than that, she seems to be doing well. Let me know what you think about the water thing.

Thank you for your reply. The vet gave her 1oz of Albon. I am assuming I should finish the entire bottle(?) What happens when the level falls and I can't get a WHOLE dropper full? Someone told me today she would need another round of treatment in three weeks. What do you think or KNOW about this?

Thank you for taking time to reply to me. The kitty is much improved except for the bloating. She is also drinking ENORMOUS amounts of water. Would the Albon cause this or should I be looking at something else? Thanks again.
