My new dog

Post by kehorner »

Here is my service dog that I will be getting at some point soon. I got to meet him last week, and he a perfect match for me. He's got a few more weeks of training to do, and I've got some fundraising to do, so it's going to be a while before I can bring him home. But here he is.

He is a German Shepard-Bouvier mix, 4 years old, and his name is Bear.

awesome!!

Why do you need to do fundraising....how much is he going to cost you?...I have friends who have THREE service dogs in their family and paid only $500 for each dog...

Hope you can bring Bear home soon!!

He's a handsome guy!

Aren't there any programs in your area to help with the costs for obtaining a service dog?

He's a beauty! Bear is definitely an appropriate name - he looks like a big teddy bear!

Whoops... I thought I had replied to this, but I guess my reply got lost in cyberspace.

I need to raise $6000. There are organizations that will give you a dog for no donations or for less, but most of them don't work with my type of disability, or they look at me and say that I'm not disabled enough. The groups that will place service dogs for free typically work with more severely disabled people and have fairly long waiting lists. My problem is that, although I will benefit greatly from having the dog, there are lots of other people who would theoretically benefit more, in the eyes of these organizations, so I would never make it to the top of the list.

So far I'm looking into the Lion's Club, Kiwanis Club, corporations, etc. There aren't really any programs set up for funding this sort of thing, unfortunately. So I'm just wandering around begging for money. I hope to have the money by the end of the semester, though.

If anybody has any great fundraising ideas, I'm certainly open to them.
