My sweet baby Tyler
My dog, an 11-year-old black Lab named Tyler, whom I've had since I was 12 and lives two miles away with my parents, is going to the vet tomorrow. My dad noticed early this morning that Tyler wasn't eating or drinking, and was much more lethargic than normal. Dad looked him over and noticed a very large mass where his left leg meets his body. Now, this is a dog that thrives on belly rubs in a family eager to give them, so there's no chance that this could have been noticeable for more than a day or so. It has to have grown very rapidly. He's limping when he walks and is throwing up about half of whatever he does eat. Dad says he's been going to the bathroom okay, no strain or lack of going, solid bowels... so we're waiting until morning when we can take him to the vet that knows him and his history. But first thing in the AM, he's going in. I have to take my friend to the airport for her flight back to California, but Dad says he won't do anything without me there.
He's had a lot of health problems -- seizures, several surgeries to remove fatty tumors, one exploratory surgery to make sure there weren't more tumors that x-ray couldn't see. Lately, his bark has been more of a squeak, and the vet presumes a tumor there, but it hasn't affected his quality of life at all, so they didn't want to risk yet another surgery if it wasn't life-threatening. This one, though... Tyler's been winding down for a couple of years now. He still runs and plays like a puppy, but when his people aren't looking, he limps and grunts and groans. He's an old pup... I've known for a while he doesn't have much left in the tank. But he's the first pet I've ever had that was bigger than a hamster. Hamsters are great, don't get me wrong, but they're nothing like a dog. And Tyler's the best, most lovable, most kind-hearted dog you could ever meet. Even at 90 pounds, I let him curl up in my arms and snuggle. It's awkward, and I usually end up with bruises, but how can you resist this face?
I love ya, boy... I wish I could keep you forever, but I won't hold on any longer than is good for you...

Re: My sweet baby Tyler
slvrwhispr, Tyler is certainly in my thoughts and prayers...
Don't assume a nasty cancer just yet, it very well could be another lipoma, or even an abcess or foreign object embedded, etc. I realize he's had some health issues, but don't assume until the vet has a chance to evaluate him.
If the vet confirmed some type of cancer prior, sometimes masses do grow quite rapidly without the owner noticing. In any event, other than ruling out lipoma etc, you'd want a quick xray to determine any evidence of a metasticizing neoplasia throughout other areas of the body, it's just a wise diagnostic. Also, if not cancer, they really should address with the vet the vomiting, nutrition, potential for arthritis, etc.
Hang in there, we're thinking of Tyler and his family, I hope it is nothing serious and he has several more good years ahead of him. ((((HUGS)))))

Re: My sweet baby Tyler
The vet we use is very, very good with dogs. Despite being a big pup, as of two months ago, Tyler showed no signs of arthritis, even though he does sort of limp around when he thinks nobody's watching. It's amazing how much of a show he puts on for us. As soon as he has our attention, he's leaping and rolling and offering a paw to shake. He adores attention, thrives on it. And that's the biggest sign, to us, that something's very wrong this time. He has no interest in attention. He's just laying there. It's very out of character for him. He wags his tail when you walk up to him, but he doesn't even pick up his head for a scratch behind the ears. I've never seen that dog listless in his entire life. He's too much of a ham.
I mean, I guess there's a chance that it's nothing, or that it's something correctable without making him suffer. But... you just get a feeling, y'know? We'll see tomorrow. Thanks for the hugs and prayers. I've never had to deal with any of this before. Hamsters just sort of croak in the middle of the night, and you go to the pet store and get another one for five bucks the next day... heh. I know, that's droll and morbid; I loved the hamsters. But they don't have personalities like dogs. I've never seen a hamster work itself into a tizzy just because I walked in the door and it was so happy to see me it couldn't help but flop around in circles, tail wagging up a small hurricane, full of slobbery kisses...
Anyway. I'll update everyone tomorrow afternoon when I get back from the airport.

Re: My sweet baby Tyler
I'm sending lots of good wishes your way. What a beautiful face. I lost my lab at the age of 11 two years ago. She had the spunk of a younger dog as well, but you could see the age creeping up on her. They are the best friends you can ask for.

Re: My sweet baby Tyler
Well... he went to the vet, had emergency surgery, and came out of it okay. But he's still got some problems that are confusing. So. Thanks for your prayers and kind words. I'll be making a post on the dog health board to discuss his treatment. I appreciate everyone here so much!
Re: My sweet baby Tyler
glad to know he came through surgery okay.....prayers for continued healing for Tyler
