Newborn

Post by Tambrey »

oohhh I was soooo upset with Sammie today....one of the feral cats had given birth during the night, but I did not know that...

I let Sammie out like I do every morning, and when he came running back from around the corner of the house, he had a kitten in his mouth, looking oh so happy to have something new to play with...however, this kitten was not playing...he had unknowingly killed it :(

I told him to drop it, and that he was bad and sent him inside...but the kitten could not be helped  So I laid it my momma so she would know that it was not where it should be so she did not go looking...

I do not know if there are/were others, I took Sammie out on a leash later on to see if he would lead me to them, and I watched her as well, but neither one ever did...

Sammie will NOT get to run in the yard for a while...he will have to be on a leash or his tie-out...even when we are out there with him...until I know about others, if there are any...

safe journey across the bridge {{{little newborn}}}...may you find someone there to teach you all you need to know...

Aww, I'm sorry to hear that. Java did that once also...there were 4 kittens on our porch from out of no where. The 2 Bassets just barked, but Java...well, her prey drive must be that much stronger. I did feel badly about it, as you do. RIP little kitty!

Poor, poor baby, my heart goes out to him.

I'm glad to hear you are keeping Sammy on a leash. There is the possibiity the kitten was already deceased before Sammy got to him, or, that Sammy was actually thinking he was gentle, but this usually applies to female dogs who have a motherly instinct. In any event, it would be good to watch all the dogs, and be sure there is no "pack behavior" amoung them when you know there are kittens somewhere.

Although I understand why you did, not sure it was a good idea to place kitten with mom, even if only temporary. Kitten had Sammy's scent on him, and the mother may neglect the other kittens is she thinks or knows Sammy was near them. Mind you, this may not be the case, but one should not take chances. Keep an eye on mom and follow her or take some time to search for the kittens if you can to ensure they are in a safe place not accessible to the dogs.
