Are cat "Eye Boogies" normal?

Post by drunkmike »

I have noticed lately that Baxter has been getting "Eye Boogers" in his eyes a bit more lately. I usually would carefully pull them away from his eyes and off his face when I noticed them before, but it seems like they are showing up a bit more then they used to. I mean I guess it could be the change in weather and me using the air more or something like that. It is brown stuff, not hardly anything to see at all, but Baxter is always in my face so I notice it lol. Both of his eyes seem normal and there is no other discharge or anything abnormal looking. Is this typical or should I make an appointment to get it looked at? Nothing has changed as far as how he acts or anything.. Still the same ol Baxter. What do you all think?

Since you are so good with pics, Mike, take a pic for us

Otherwise, probably nothing to worry about, since there is only a small amount and they are dry. Could be that he isn't grooming his face as often as he usually does. Is he sleeping more than usual? No sneezing or coughing, or anything like that?

I already wiped his face off when I came home from work today so I will have to see if there is any tomorrow. I have been working longer hours since it has been so busy with work so I'm assuming he is sleeping more while I'm not home. He is still always waiting for me as soon as I walk in the door ready to run between my legs trying to trip me as I move around the house so I know he feels normal! He might sneeze like once a week if that and it is usually when he is grooming his face so I'm pretty sure he is just tickling his nose. Other then that all signs are normal for him! His favorite sleeping spot is directly in front of one of the vents for the ac (it is on a totally different side of the room, but it still blows on him a bit) could that be what is causing it since like I said I am using the AC more with all the heat?

Doubtful. I'd have to look at his pics again, but if he has deep-set eyes or a long bridged nose, it may prohibit him from grooming the eye area just a tad.

If he had tears, runny eyes, sneezed all the time, was anorexic, showed obvious signs of pain or irritation from the eyes, or the third eyelid covered most of the eye, then you'd have something to worry about.

He actually has a short somewhat stubby nose as far as I'm concerned.. and His eyes aren't deepset at all. I have to see if I have some pictures of him saved somewhere online. hmm..

I just looked at two of his pics, and in those of course, he looks perfectly healthy. I wouldn't worry about it, it's probably only because he may not be grooming as much (summer heat sometimes makes them less active)

drunkmike, I wanted to say that I enjoy your questions. You never come up with a stupid one ever so please dont think that. I think there should be more people like you who ask the questions that you do. I just love the topics! 'eye boogies' ROFL And that is a perfectly refreshing question to hear when I have dealt with 4 kids (3 are 4 yrs and under) and all I heard today from my 4 yr old , was hey mommo(they call me that when I dont answer to mama  ) Why does Emi(my almost 3 yr old girl named Noemi) has snot in her eye? I say why do you say it's snot, it coudl just be an eye boogie. He says NOoooo mama, its a snot. I say why? he says well I saw her pick her nose and she stuck her finger in her eye so it's a snot. Ewwwwwww !!!!!!

Yep eye boogies are great!

But atleast its only those two now that I am picking up toys and cleaning up after instead of my old roomate who is finally gone. I'm too young for kids.. and I would like to keep it that way.. for a looooong time to come :)

My cat Cleo has a watery eye sometimes, always the same one. She can go for days or weeks and be fine but then it waters (thin tears not mucus) for a short while. I thought maybe she has a hair pointing a funny way or something since an infection would make it run more often I suppose.
