Poison Ivy, Oak, Sumac.. contageous to my kitty?

Post by drunkmike »

I think I have just figured out what a small itchy rash area on my back is.. I'm pretty sure it might be poison sumac. I have already done what I can to myself to clean and dry it out until tomorrow when I hit the doctor, but is my Baxter going to be ok or are cats not immune to stuff like this? I would hate to condem him to another room until I get cleaned up, but if I have to I will.

In general they are not allergic to the plants BUT if the brush up against it or play in it and get it on their fur they can bring it home to daddy! So no I dont think you have to worry about putting him in another room but make sure you are cleaned off well so he doesnt brush up against you as well. Remember your clothes that you were in when you got the sumac on your needs to be cleaned as well.

I rubbed my face on my dog while hugging and cuddling him, and found out later he had been walking through some bushy poison ivy! He was fine, I had it on my face and hands! :o

ok good deal. I would have hated to keep him locked out when I went to bed! All of my clothes are in "contaminated baskets" closed in the bathroom until I finish getting them all washed. I think I might have had it for a few days as the only time I could have picked it up was when I was re-doing all of the mulch and pulling weeds out in my front yard which was Tuesday. I have it all cleaned with alcohol and covered in calahist lotion and I will have to sleep with my shirt tucked into shorts which is going to proove to be a hard night of sleep but atleast it will keep it for the most part where it is! Baxter will be happy he isnt getting kicked to the hallway or "his room" by himself for the night :) Thanks for the quick replies!

Actually, if you're applying lotion, don't let Baxter lick your skin, ok? Don't let him lick your skin anyway until you've completely healed.
