If the dog is pulling when you walk....I have found that the very best device is a sporn collar...I guarantee that dog will not pull!!

However, if you watch the video...THAT dog is already well trained...mine dances all over when she sees the collar and it is a 5 minute job to get it onto her!!
She is getting better at being still though....
I was thinking of getting a no-pull harness, same layout as that but I don't think it was the same brand, but I needed to get her a new collar for her tags.

I have to state this...
A dog that is mouthing at you and jumping isnt going to respond to any change in collar unless you teach her that you are alpha. The sporn collar(bra we call it) will help some dogs not pull but a stubborn dog and a dog that is hard will not care. Keep the receipt in case you need to bring it back. The book i mentioned is key.

Also you found a place that can train... I think that is a good idea IF they are the right type of people. Just because I do it doesnt mean I like everyone that does it. There are many that use choking to make dog submissive or other means to make them know you are the alpha.

There are basically two type of dogs. Dogs that want you do be alpha and will respond eventually to your efforts and all is well.
Then there are dogs that no matter how you train them still have that instinct to be alpha and will always challenge you. Max is this way but he knows not to get me mad. Some dogs are just harder than others and you would never find me using a nylon leash on hard dogs, it just doesnt work. I have used different kinds of collars but I have also trained my dogs to walk next to me as well off of a leash.

Please do not take dog off of leash unless you are in a fenced in yard, if she is not responding to you she might run off.

Anyone who does training on any dog must insist that YOU also be there so you are trained as well on how to go about training your dog. Anyone can train your dog and then give her back to you. You only waste your money and teach your dog that you are still not the alpha. If a trainer does not ask that you be there so he can train both of you then dont bother with the person. Training costs differ, I live near a rich area and well the money is high here. But different places cost differently, I can back to my home town and it would be half of what I would pay here.

if you do not mind, after you speak with the trainer on the phone please let me know what they say. I would hate for you to be surprised and also have Maya abused or something that would make the situation worse for you and her.

If you are looking for a quick fix then stop looking there is no quick fix to this, she has been allowed to do this a long time and other things and needs proper training from you more than anyone else. Patience is key and teaching her that you are willing to be patient is what a good alpha does. Maya like any dog can smell anything. They know when we are upset or happy, they know when someone have taken a drug(legal or illegal) becuase is messes with the persons natural scent, they know where us women are during our cycle and when we get pregnant(Max was the one who told me I was pregnant with the last 3 and even told me when I was in labor). Dogs are very smart and you have to wait and see what happens after you do a trainingn session. That book i mentioned is a good training tool.

If Maya keeps jumping you have to keep telling her no and crating her. This wont be fixed overnight. I fear that you want fast results and that you will look to someone in your area that might want to use shock or worse on her. I am familiar with shock collars and other tools to use on a dog and although I do not think that shock collars are a bad tool, i absolutely believe the person using it can be using it wrong and that I fear because that can make a dog worse. I would rather see a dog listen to you because they know you are alpha and want to please you NOt because you are alpha and they fear you.

Let me know how yesterday went with Maya and her jumping.

Oh another thing, I would never use the sporn collar on my german shepherds but I did have a dalmation that when I put that on him was the best dog on a leash. But it was only becuase of that thing on him, as soon as i took that off of him he wsa jumping and being stupid again. Just keep your reciept if you get one.

No, I'm not looking for a 'quick' fix but if I cannot train her to stop jumping, I will need help. I would definitely, definitely not let someone take her and train her without me there, as obviously, I need training with her as well.

I know you say there has been expensive and half price training, but even so, what is expensive training?

Again, I don't know if you missed it, but what do you think of clicker training? Maya is good to the point of sitting, and I think, since if I throw her feet on the ground she just jumps right back up, that no physical force, may be a good way to train her. But, I don't know how well it would work.

I have seen clicker training done BUT only on puppies. I do not use it myself so I can not say on older dogs.

I've seen it done on one puppy and many times older dogs. There's a show I was watching on Animal Planet, 'It's me or the dog'. She goes into homes with troubled dogs and trains them and trains the household clicker training and different techniques.

I also found this website.

One effective method for most dogs who jump on people: while the dog is on a lead, press downward (not forceably, but firmly) on the lead (where it is attached to the collar) so the dog's head is low and therefore less able to jump, and at the same time, use your knee extended slightly forward when you see the dog rising to jump...your knee is an obstacle and once the dog feels your knee pressed on his/her chest once or twice, he/she will learn it is not a pleasant feeling. This in no way is harmful to the dog, you are not forcing your knee upon the dog, you are simply using it as an obstacle between the dog's force and your body. At the exact same time you do this, use a verbal command (like "DOWN, girl"), so the dog associates the command and your knee with unwanted jumping behavior.
