Re: Puppy Training
JUDYS, If i recall right, Meka is a Lab. If she is still digging you have to correct her every time you catch her. Get right up to her and tell her NO! Or phooey.
She still might be bored so I would reccomend more play time and meaty bones for her. Make sure they are big ones as she is a large dog. DO NOT cook them at all, they will be just fine the way they are and keep the meat on them if there is some. The marrow might cause some soft stool but they are a good toy.
My boys play with wood . you know how it is when you have 80 lbs of dog and 75 lbs are all mouth! We always have wood and are always splitting wood. The boys always find a hunk of wood to run with. But we do have those really big tug toys as well. Those ropes you see, i have one and they are great the dogs kill them(shake their heads back and fourth) with them all the time and then come to us to ask to play. We also make sock monsters as well. Yes I know they are big dogs but we ne sock have a lot of socks and I make big ones. Take old socks and stuff then in two separate socks then tie them together. or make it with more. THey are fun too.

Yep, Meka is the lab. She knows that she's not suppose to dig. When we discover a new hole her tail goes between her legs and she looks very sorry! I have given the dogs bones before, but I have a serious mess to clean up in their room in the morning!! Not worth it I'm afraid.

Re: Puppy Training
It was really funny visiting my parents this weekend. The dog that I trained and raised from a puppy still lives there since I've never had a place of my own that allows dogs. Mom and Dad are mom and dad, but it's very clear who's alpha -- ME.
Tyler (10 year old black lab) was barking up a storm at lord only knows what. Mom and Dad were trying to shush him and he just kept barking and barking. I finally go, calmly, "Tyler, enough." And he immediately stopped, ran to my feet, flopped down, and rolled over on his back to show his belly. My husband cracked up. He said, "Man, I hope some day you're that good at training the kids." I told him not to hold his breath.

slvrwhisper ------bowing at your feet for your Alpha femaleness! Great job! LOL Mom and dad must have had mouths open at that one. LOL ROFL
I love it, it gives me power! Although every once in a while mine will just go screw around to say hey we're still kids and we like to play and push it. LOL

JUDYS i hear ya on the mess thing. I would suggest you get a big rope or make one and give her more time to play with you.

Re: Puppy Training
I just think it's amazing that even though I haven't lived with the dog for about five years, he still listens to me on the first command. I mean, I see him a couple of times a month, but I never imagined that would be often enough to maintain that status in his mind. But, yeah, when he was a puppy, I was the only one who trained him. My sister was too young and didn't have the patience, and my parents didn't really care what he did as long as he pooped outside and didn't chew up the furniture. I taught him all the basic commands and he still responds to them all -- except for heel; he never could quite get that one. He's just too exuberant for heel, I think. Even as a very obviously senior dog (my sweet boy is so gray) he still bounds around like he was a pup.
Re: Puppy Training
I found a close dog training place around here. 20 - 30 minute drive. I was wondering, after I try all of this, and if it doesn't work, is dog training really expensive?
Re: Puppy Training
personally I do not like any kind of a choke collar...
If the dog is pulling when you walk....I have found that the very best device is a sporn collar...I guarantee that dog will not pull!!
However, if you watch the video...THAT dog is already well trained...mine dances all over when she sees the collar and it is a 5 minute job to get it onto her!!
She is getting better at being still though....
