We have come to a very difficult decision, but Medb has gotten worse just in the past 48 hours and our quality of life is suffering trying to cope with her accidents, falling, etc. She is in pain and does not appear to be enjoying life even as much as she did a couple of weeks ago.

I will be taking her to University Animal Clinic tomorrow so my very long-time vet Dr. Mark C... can help us send her to the Bridge. It is the only fair thing for the dog and for us.

If you wish to be there, let me know and I’ll tell you what time—mainly this is for Mother—I’ll be calling them first thing to find the best time.

Medb was born on the Rockin’ W Ranch, Florence, TX on approximately 15 Nov 1992 and moved here [Austin] around Christmas time. She is ¼ Aussie Shepherd, ¼ Black Lab, ¼ Dalmation, and ¼…dog… She is without a doubt the smartest dog I’ve ever known, sweet, protective without aggression - and has been our friend and companion for nearly 15 years. This is breaking my heart, but it is the right thing to do.
Love,

Nan, Rollie, William and all our fuzzy companions here…all of us will miss the old gal in our own way.

I'm so sorry. This sounds so much like the decision I had to make for my Mickey, and I still miss him. I know it was the right thing to do for him, as this is right for Medb. {{{{{HUGS}}}}} to all of you.

Thank you friends for the kind thoughts. At 9 this morning Nan and Rollie stopped here at my apt complex to let William off, then went on to University Animal Clinic. William said he had no appetite for breakfast but wanted to play one of the adventure games on his computer. At 10 Nan called to say Medb has gone to the Bridge. I have told William and he understands, although he has never known a time when Medb wasn't part of his life... One of the things I loved and admired about her was that when we brought 2 day-old William home from the hospital, the 4 year-old Medb, an "only dog" all her life at that point, immediately accepted the new infant in her "pack" and became a gently protective nanny figure. It is yet another dark, wet day in Austin... so unusual for Central Texas summer. Below are pics of a happier time: April '02. Winnie loved this pack as soon as she met them: I am thinking about her and Medb greeting one another beside the Bridge... But I know Sergio the Golden is going to be lonely now - if he wasn't so frisky I'd keep him with me awhile. May try to anyway... [And no, that is a treat of some sort the old Hobbit is offering... NOT what it looks like!] Thanks again, folks. We appreciate your being here.
