Subject: Research At UC Davis for Breeds with Back Problems
Hello, my name is Linda Stowe and I have been working with the
researchers at the Veterinary Genetics Lab at the University of CA Davis
to try to find the gene(s) responsible for back problems (IVDD) in
dachshunds. We are now expanding to other breeds. I am asking you to
help me in finding dogs of your breed who have had back surgery or are
or have been paralyzed. We can either do cheek swabs which are very
easy or you can do a blood draw if the dog qualifies. If you or others
you know can do cheek swabs, please write me and I can send them to
you. You will do 4 per dog and I will send instructions and an
postage-paid envelope to return them to the researchers at Davis. If
your or others can do a blood draw, please read the flyer at
http://www.dodgerslist.com/lit/ivddhandout.htm
<http://www.dodgerslist.com/lit/ivddhandout.htm%A0%A0> Davis refunds $15
per blood draw to you and they also provide a Fed Ex # for you to ship.
If you belong to any other lists, please cross-post this request. I am
hoping with everyone's help we can find an answer to this terrible
disease in all predisposed breeds. If you have any questions, please
email me at lstowe at insightbb dot com
Thank you for your help.

Traci, is a cheek swab something a non-medical person can do? It sounds like it....

Re: Attn Tambrey and Traci
Thank you...I just sent an e-mail to Linda giving her Sammie's story and asking if she wants samples from him. I also e-mailed the sister of the original owner to find out if she may still have paperwork or anything on Sammie's lineage to help get more samples from his bloodline.
Re: Attn Tambrey and Traci
Yes, but it has to be a sterile environment, the equipment must be handled and prepared carefully, and packaged appropriately. Personally, they should be having veterinary clinics do this for their clients, since they know how to properly prepare and send samples without risk for contamination, temperature problems, currier problems, etc. Lots of time and expense can be devoted to this, but if samples aren't handled carefully, contamination could make all that expense for naught.

Re: Attn Tambrey and Traci
If they decide they want a sample from Sammie, I would definitely have the vet do this...for just that reason...
Re: Attn Tambrey and Traci
Thanks Traci! I emailed with Biscotti's info, but I have no idea of her parentage, so it may be for naught.
Re: Attn Tambrey and Traci
That was fast...I just got an email saying they would love a sample from Biscotti.
Tambrey, the reply was from Katy...so don't delete.

Re: Attn Tambrey and Traci
who did you send to?....I have not gotten a reply back as of yet....
I even checked the SPAM folder....hhmmmm...maybe they have enough doxies and are only looking for other breeds now?

Re: Attn Tambrey and Traci
Sammie goes in Thursday morning to have blood drawn...we were waiting trying to find some littermates...I e-mailed the sister of his previous PREVIOUS owner, but never heard back....so they finally said to just send his...that even one will help in the overall scheme of things....
