Help with Chloe

Post by Mona »

Little Chloe came down with a URI (slight), but now has diarrhea from the Clavamox (which I am changing with the vet). Meanwhile, any suggestions on feeding to try and get her stools to firm up. Traci please or other experienced kitten Moms out there. Thanks so much.

Mona I am mixing water with the canned food and trying to get her to eat it, but her nose is stuffed up. :(

try mixing just a small spoon of pumpkin in with her food and see if that works...you also want to make sure she isn't getting dehydrated...if her diarrhea is mild and she's eating/drinking it shouldn't be a problem, but check her often for dehydration

Tina thanks,

I will ask the vet about that when she calls back. She has had several bouts of diarrhea, so may need fluids, but she is bouncing around like crazy too.

I mix the food with plenty of water, have stopped the KMR (vet said to) etc. She was also dewormed, so has been through a lot lately.

It will get better!!

Ask your vet about panacur for the diarrhea or at least get a fecal done to rule out all forms of parasites or gastrointestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Amoxi might be used instead of clavamox, but ideally the clavamox is less resistant to URI's.

As for diet, are you feeding canned or dry? She may be able to do ok on dry alone. You can ask your vet about using a 1/8 teaspoon of dry metamucil too if you want (once or twice a day), but ideally, a fecal would tell you more, in the offchance this is coccidia, it could be treated with panacur anyway.

If she is congested, ask your vet if you can try using a drop of Afrin (non-medicated) nasal saline in each nostril for a day or two, and also try steaming up your bathroom for her intermittently to help break up the congestion. Warm her food slightly if you can, too.

I turned in a fecal sample this morning. I will know today, it seems as though the dewormer and Clavamox took its toll. Also, may be the cold is helping this. She is eating quite a bit of canned food, and some of the dry Science Diet Kitten nuggets.

I will ask about the Afrin and will steam her.

She is so cute, gets up on my daughters bed, and squeals to get her own way!!! Now she runs to her food dish and meows when I bring it in. I cut down on the water in the canned to just a drop to warm it.

I will post updates. Honeybun is getting better with her, she comes to visit her now. :)

The vet just called about Chloe

Her fecal was negative for Coccidia and parasites, but to they want to treat
her with Albon and an antidiarrheal natural sprinkle medication in her food.

SHe also said it was ok to use the plain AFrin.
