Animal Hospital on Fire

Post by mamabear »

Please say a prayer for the Tech who lost thier beloved dog last night.

I recieved a call from my sister last night saying that her husband (deals with the spca) had to come help rescue/transport animals from the animal hospital I use to work at when I was 17. Although the old owner hasnt been there for 4 years and I dont know the new owners I feel for them. There was a fire going on and this is a house two story with the tech living upstairs with his/her dog. The tech was out for hte night but the dog was still there and the fire started in that kitchen. It is under investigation and I do not know the details. They do think it was the microwave though. The dog died in the fire but the other animals that were in the hospital itself survived. 3 dogs and 3 cats were treated for smoke. I told my sister that the spca shelter was not equiped for recieving ICU animals and to make sure htey went to the ER animal hopital and that is what they were going to do anyway.

I do hope these animals get proper treatment (the hospital they went to I know personally and would have recomended for them to go there and that is where they are so i am confident that they are being treated well)

Just so sad ! Could have been worse but wow to loose even one was horrible. :(

I'm so sorry, how tragic....my thoughts and prayers are with the poor dog and his mistress.

I'm confused about the clinic/house...is it two seperate buildings or one building: a house setting for the clinic? If the latter, I hope the owners do something about that...houses are not appropriate for animal clinics, and the codes are much much different.

Thank you Traci. Yes it is two story house. But the animal hospital is only on the bottom floor and basement. It is Or I should say was up to OSHA standards when I was working there years ago but I could not say what became of it afterward. I did hear it was fixed up real nice after the new owners took over it, but have not been there to see this. The 2nd floor was always a rented apartment. When I was there it was someone that actually became the office manager there. But years later she moved out. I guess they rented it to this tech and she was living there. But the upstairs didnt have anything to do with the hospital, it was a an apt for someone.

I don't know if this was faulty wiring in the 2nd floor or something they might have forgotten to turn off or what. I certainly know that just because a place paces inspections doesnt mean that it is perfect or that the job was done right. I don't even know if it was burnt to the ground yet. I am still waiting. That was my first job, right out of high school, I had some bad memories with the vet that was my boss. Some things I did i not realize what they were or meant until I was older. Aside from that I did have memories there of the animals I helped and even still have their pictures with me and when I teach people about animals I tell them my stories. I do hope they find the cause of this and if it was someones fault to deal with it accordingly and if not then at least they know what it was and can put it to rest.

I am sure the tech feels horrible and mourning their dog, i wish there was something else to help but right now there isnt. I would be so scared if I got a phone call saying oh sorry but....... I did hear the other animals that were in ICU are all doing fine and so are the others and the boarders as well. None of the firemen or other volunteers helping take the animals received smoke thank God.

My sisters husband I think was the one who found the dog upstairs with the fireman. I am not sure but I think that is what happen. I will have to speak with him later and see if he is ok.

thank you

I always shudder when I see houses being used for a veterinary clinic )or any human clinic either). They are not up to standards and codes as would a clinic be. If it were an older house for example, pipes, electrical, etc will always wear out and these just are not suitable for a busy clinic setting.

I know this house is old. I mean it was there for years before I got there and I was there 16 years ago. I think it was built in the 50's :( . Just sad all around.

Neither could I. I love all animals and try not to hurt the little buggies either. I have a few fears and that is one of them. Not sure i could ever handle that. There were no other animals found after they rechecked the fire. But there is an investigation going on and hopefully we will know.
