Cats and Birds
Hello, all I didn’t know where to post this question, so I posted it here. If I am in the wrong place, please move it, thank you. My question is my mom found a kitten out side my building and it was dieing. One of the kitten’s eye was all filled with water or something. I cleaned it up and gave the kitten water, milk. And I got some medicine for the eye, form my neighbor. Who has so many cats. Now the kitten is nice and healthy runs around. But my problem is I have two cockatiels in my house who fly around in the living room all day. And the only time they go in there cage is when they sleep or need food or water. I wanted to know where it is a good idea for me to keep the kitten. Because I’m afraid that when the kitten gets a little bigger, she might try to attack my cockatiels. Everyone in my family has become really fond of the little kitten, and we really don’t want to give her away. But I also don’t want my birds to get hurt. So what should I do?
Re: Cats and Birds
we have numerous cats and a cockatiel...
we use water bottles to train the cats...I will let the cats watch Matrix...they can get nose to nose with the cage...but as soon as a paw touches the cage...they get squirted with a stream of water...they begin to think that the cage does it!
I have a friend who's cockatiel will guard the doorway to the laundry room where the litterbox is, and the cats will refuse to go in there if the bird is squacking and pacing the floor...she has to go pick up and move the bird for the cats to walk past it...
Of course...never EVER leave them alone together when unsupervised...
and you still need to get that kitten to a vet for proper care of what is most likely an upper respiratory infection....but unless you know for sure...as well as weight and age of kitten...you should never give medicines meant for other cats...

Re: Cats and Birds
But is it safer to just give the cat away to someone who wants it and I know will take care of it the way I would??
Just don’t want to see anything happen to the birds, what do I do when I am out of the house??
And no worry taking it to a vet on monday and planning on getting it one those chips for when and if he/she gets lost
Btw I still can not tell if it’s a boy or girl

Re: Cats and Birds
If you can get the kitten in before Monday, that would be better...if it has a URI, it can turn in hours from fine to dying...
the microchip is a good idea in case the kitten should manage to escape the house...
here is a link to help determine if you have a guy or gal...
kitten care
and yes...it would be better to rehome to kitten to an INDOOR ONLY home if there is a great fear it will bother your birds and end up getting into trouble for doing what comes naturally to it...
