Don't know if it's been covered, just curious...

Post by cozmokramer02 »

So we've introduced a new kitten about a month ago and our almost one year old cat is very loving and kind to it now, they lay around with each other, clean each other etc. It just seems that lately we have been going to the vet for various reasons, scratch to the eye from playing, and the new one had a cold. So I thought I would turn to this for my next question.
The older cat is now deficating randomly. It isn't a full stool, it is just a bit of it that comes out randomly unbeknowing to her. It will usually just drop off and she won't think a thing of it, yet we have to find it in random places all the time. There is no change in her diet, we haven't switched foods (Purina Kitten Chow Yellow Bag), she is still excrementing pretty regularly, and she was recently to the vet and showed no signs to him. I just thought I would post this before I call up the vet again. Thanks in advance!

Are they sharing a litter box? If so I would get another one and see if that helps. Your cat may not be "finishing" the job correctly because he doesn't like to use a box that isn't messy from himself.

Is she a long hair? Is it possible it's jus sticking to the hair and falling off where ever it may? That happens at times with my long hair...I have to have his fur on his behind trimmed to keep him from getting cling ons :D

Other than that it could be territorial...or litter box issues. I agree with Catastrophe, I'd try a second litter box. Some cats don't like to use the same box for pee and poo.

Is it drops of a dark brown liquid that you're finding?

If so, it may not be stool--it could be the discharge that sometimes comes from the anal sacs, located on either side of the anus. Sometimes these drip. Sometimes they're impacted and need some attention, such as pressing them to expel the excess fluid. This is a bit tricky, and you might prefer to have a vet do it.

The brownish fluid discharge is normal, and occasionally cats leave drops of it around....

Thanks for the ideas everyone! I'll try the second litter box when we move to our two bedroom apartment, right now, we're in a studio'ish one where there isn't enough room for us, let alone two litter boxes. She seems to have subsided in her ways though, everything is going great, I haven't been finding little poops at all since I posted. And to the last person it wasn't loose stool at all, it was a firm poop. Thanks again everyone!
