Anyway, great news! Sam is home and on the road to recovery. Apparently the biggest problem he had was some major bladder blockage. The food thing remains a mystery, but he's on a prescription diet now (and antibiotics).
Ferrana, what terrific news! Image

I'm so glad to hear that Sam is doing so well! He sounds like such a character! That's OK - you can post pictures later when you're not so busy. Your description of him "draws a picture" in my mind! I'm sure that having Sam well again must have lifted your Dad's spirits.

That's so sad that your Dad has to deal with Parkinson's. I hope they can find some help for him soon.

That must have been an adorable picture of your Sheltie puppy attacking Sam's paw, with Sam being so big! But they must have ended up being friends later.

I'll let you go now. I hope your sick baby gets well soon and good luck on that thesis! Image And thanks again for filling us in!

Other way around. :) I guess my description was a little confusing there...it's a picture of Sam as an 8-week-old kitten attacking Angel the sheltie's hind leg. Sam is doing the whole, lying on his side, biting down, ears back, eyes glowing, legs kicking like mad thing. Angel is just sitting there like, "What's his deal??" Such a viscious little kitten! ;)

They've always been friends--Sam was scared for a few days, but Angel immediately took him in as her pup...er, kitten. 8)

All Blue Buffalo cans have been recalled...I just called their number to confirm it. I may be the only one here that uses it, but am passing it on.

I just read Fda web site from a friend... And they said As of April 26, 2007, FDA had
received over 17,000 consumer complaints relating to this
outbreak, and those complaints included reports of approximately
1950 deaths of cats and 2200 deaths of dogs.

If anybody would like to read rest (it just about Import Alert)

IMPORTANT!!

The pet food recall has been expanded again by quite a few brands as of today. Please go to www.fda.gov to check the latest listing.

I am in Australia and just found out about these recalls. My cat has recently been put on Hill's prescription k/d diet (apparently unaffected) Does anyone know if this recall was in America only as I didn't hear anything about a recall in Australia. I don't want to feed my cat Hill's if it is still unsafe or was not recalled in Australia. It is scary to think that the healthier option for pets could and has harmed them.

I'm sorry I can't directly answer your question, but I haven't heard about any recalls in Australia of Hill's Prescription dry food.

Back when this was happening this spring, my vet prescribed M/D for my kitty Buster, who she thought might be diabetic. My other two cats, Nikki and Shadow, also ate it. But they are all the same age, so the vet said it wouldn't hurt anything. When the news came out that M/D was tainted, I panicked!

However, Hills contacted the country's vets (including mine). I took all three in for testing (which Hills paid for), and all were fine. In the end, luckily for Hills, no cats were casualties of this food. Hills has stated that they will never buy wheat gluten from China again. (Of course, at this point in time, the US is not buying any consumable items from China!)

Hills has said they reformulated the M/D dry food. So it is safe now. The Hills K/D food was never affected, so your kitty should be fine eating it. I know how scary this was for us, so just finding out about it, I know how scary it must have been for you! I hope you feel better now, Joie!

Thanks Sue and kids! I did a bit of research last night and the Hill's M/D was recalled in Australia but only as a precaution. Apparently none of the other pet foods that were affected by the recall in the US reached Australian shores. Still awfully scary to think that something like this could happen and harm our kitties! Glad to hear your kitties are healthy despite eating M/D.

Hartz Mountain Corp. Cat vitamins recalled
11/3/2007
By The Associated Press

The following recall has been announced:

The Hartz Mountain Corp. of Secaucus, N.J., is recalling 3,600 bottles of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats because the product might be contaminated with salmonella, which could infect pets and people who come into contact with the cat vitamins. No reports of illnesses have been reported, according to the company.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea and abdominal pain in both people and cats.

The recalled cat vitamins, with the lot code number SZ-16371 and the UPC number 32700-97701, were manufactured by UFAC (USA) Inc. in Baconton, Ga.

For more information, consumers can call Hartz at 800-275-1414.

Admin note: As is customary with Hartz, they deny salmonella has been found in their products, but the FDA obviously feels differently. In any case, owners who purchased this product, contact Hartz for a refund. Better yet, NEVER buy Hartz products, EVER.
