Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
Tina, yeah, Organix sounds too pricey, especially for the outside cats and critters. They've been getting Kit n Kaboodle...18 lbs for 9 bucks or cheaper when it's on sale. I'm hoping that doesn't go belly-up on me. So far it's been okay along with the non-wheat gluten things from Purina and 9 lives. I don't see too much rpc in the ingredients in these products, but there is quite a bit of corn gluten or corn gluten meal. Guess once we cut back on things with gluten or concentrates and this brand and that brand and yet another brand, that doesn't really leave us with much, and even then we'll still be waiting for the other shoe to drop on those as well. And to think, things had finally died down with the wheat glunt, now all of this. Good luck with the Organix, hope it stays safe!
Kitty kisses,
Debbie

Royal Canin has pulled a number of their products due to having the rice protein concentrate purchased by Wilbur-Ellis. They've known about this potential for days now and only now has owned up to it. There are still 2 more unidentified companies that needs to come forward on this.

Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
Wilbur-Ellis sold contaminated rice protein concentrate to 5 diferent companies. So far the only ones that have come forward were Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo and now Royal Canin. Neither the FDA or Wilbur-Ellis will name the remaining two. They will not name themselves as yet. If they did use the contaminated rpc then you could very well be feeding it to your pets, if it was used. To be on the safe side it would be nice to know who they are. Should their products test good, then we can all go back to buying it. In the meantime, it's a guess as to who they are and which products are affected. NB didn't even list the rpc on their bags or make note that they changed their formula. What do you mean by 2 more unidentified companies?

Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
Please provide evidence for this. On April 10, RC-CANADA voluntarily pulled CANADA'S MediCal Feline Dissolution Formula (canned, due to one lot of the product contained contaminated wheat gluten (from Menu Foods Ontario plant). From that point until yesterday's announcement for the other RC products, no other foods were recalled.Auntie Debbie wrote:Royal Canin has pulled a number of their products due to having the rice protein concentrate purchased by Wilbur-Ellis. They've known about this potential for days now and only now has owned up to it.
Please note, that the plant you are probably referring to, is a Swiss-Nestle SA division, which means that the US division probably does not oversee it. Also, Purina and other companies distribute to global companies which you should be thankful for, since countries like China place little value over pets, let alone the desire to introduce better care, including quality pet foods.Auntie Debbie wrote:and be very careful with Purina. I've caught them a couple of times being super evasive only to go belly up on something. Yesterday I called them and actually got through. I wanted to know, mainly...at that point....what they are producing in their new plant in China and if any of it will hit the markets here. They claimed there is no plant in China or any abroad at all. Google Pet Food Plant in China and you'll find numerous reports of their new plant., yet I'm being told it doesn't exist. Today they've revamped their website with everything you ever wanted to know about wheat gluten but were afraid to ask. Old news. We're now onto rice protein concentrate and now corn gluten. Just be cautious.
What exactly is your complaint that you feel Purina hasn't been truthful, i.e., regarding their website updates? ALL the pet food manufacturers have updated their information, their websites, and including new and improved facts sections so they can address the most common and frequently asked questions as they arise. What is secretive about that?
Perhaps you don't understand re: the vets: they cannot disclose any information without sufficient evidence. To do so would be libel. As for the "other" companies, they are not obligated to disclose anything until they have produced their own testing, provided valid results, and until that has been done, what more do you expect them to do? Remember, collection of samples/batches takes time, testing methods take time, collection of statistics takes time. If those companies are the least bit aware one or more lots of their product may be contaminated, I'm sure they are taking steps to test, notify the proper channels, and take action to recall the product....based on evidence.Auntie Debbie wrote:There are still 3 companines who won't come forward with the rpc and now the corn gluten...may be a question of time before we find out that it's in our stuff here too. In addition to the W-E thing, there are a group of vets that claim they've noticed a pattern involving 5 different (I believe) foods but they're not disclosing any info either. I wish they would all just speak up already with what know. That way we can avoid those foods until properly tested. If they test neg, we can feed it again, if not.....
I really doubt if these companies are really so concerned about the animals...oh sure you get the ads with grandpa and the puppy and all those informative things on their sites, but it's a business. They are protecting their *sses and assets now.
Your opinion on companies covering their expletives is your opinion. But, you forget, they like you, depended on valid sources for their ingredients. You forget that they too, are facing loss of trust. Don't forget, nearly ALL of the companies affected by this recall have stated emphatically, they ARE NO LONGER USING THE SUPPLIER from China. They are TAKING NECESSARY STEPS to correct these situations, to ensure it doesn't happen again.

As I suggested on the dog board, read the timelines. Royal Canin is the latest, leaving two mroe with "potetially" bad food to step up. With ISO I'm sure they know who they are. If this was baby food, this would not be dragging on and all suppliers would have been named as a precaution.
As for the China plant, using local ingredients, I'm concerned that some of that may drift our way. They denied it even existing on the phone. They're either lying and hiding something or clueless. Scarey either way. And for the record, I am still using their products! Only the ones that I've been using, staying way from wheat gluten. But now with the corn gluten scare, it would be nice if they put our minds at ease by letting us know their corn gluten is safe too. As for their website, they once posted their products were good, offered some FAQs without mention anyting about wheat gluten and where they get it. A few days later they pulled Alpo cuts. New FAQs, after taht state they did get the wg from China but they won't anymore.....I thought they said they were good????
I will never, ever post another thing about any recall here again. I promise. I can see it's not welcomed.

Please understand that I have no desire to become involved in any difference of opinion between forum Admins and forum members.
But since the member is no longer going to post recalls, if anyone wants up-to-date information, please go to this excellent site. I give credit to one of the past posters who supplied the address of the site awhile back. I have no desire to "wade through" 12 pages of posts to find your name. You know who you are. If you'd like to step up and take credit, please do!

This site gives a very timely, thorough account of events. They do not give any opinions of their own, although they may quote the FDA or other government officials. People who wish to give their opinions are supplied with links to blogs. I also took advantage of getting all the latest recalls sent to me by email.
Hopefully, this website will keep help keep everyone interested in timely reporting of recalls up to date.

Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
Sorry I haven't posted an update lately. I was on spring break last week(perk of teaching), and had to go back to work this week. And now my own infant son is sick, so we're just a household of joy at the moment.
Anyway, great news! Sam is home and on the road to recovery. Apparently the biggest problem he had was some major bladder blockage. The food thing remains a mystery, but he's on a prescription diet now (and antibiotics).
I'm finishing my thesis in the next two weeks (ooohhh, my aching head...and typing fingers...), so I likely won't be driving the 75+ miles to visit the folks and get pics of Sam anytime soon. But I promise, there WILL be pics posted of him eventually!
Maybe I can paint a picture. He's a GIANT flame-point Siamese who is the biggest purring blob...and who bossed my parents' sheltie around from day one. I *do* have a pic here (but "regular" film, not digital) of him viciously attacking her paw when he was about 8 weeks old, hee! I took in the sheltie 2 years ago as my dad's Parkinson's made it too difficult to care for her, but even now, she goes bonkers whenever she hears a collar with a bell (like Sam's). She thinks it's HER KITTY and she goes nuts looking for him! Maybe I should bring her when we go so they can have a reunion.
