Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
Ferrana, Sam's case is pretty scary, especially if your vet cannot absolutely determine that tainted cat food was the cause. I certainly hope that it was not a case of lily poisoning! Have you asked your parents if they bought or were given an Easter lily this year?
Prayers continue for Sam, hoping that his liver damage is not permanent and he makes a complete recovery! BTW, I put my kitties' and doggy's pictures on this topic - I think it's only fair that you get a picture of "Sam the Wonder Cat" on here!
Hi! I'm back from my vet's. My kitties were so well behaved, I was sooo proud of my babies. Everyone had blood tests done. My vet has an extensive lab, but she has sent it to a nearby licensed lab for testing so no question can ever come up (like she just said she did the tests and "pocketed" the money). She would never do that but some may not have her ethics! So I have to wait till Monday afternoon to get the results (**pace the floor**). But she said that she has had a large number of people bringing in their kitties for testing, and none has had any exposure to any toxin yet.
I obviously don't love pet food manufacturers. But I thought it was very decent of Hills to offer to pay for testing. The others have done nothing, so I now have more respect for them. Otherwise, we would have been in a very real quandary about where to get the money to pay for the tests.
I spent the rest of the afternoon, cleaning out the pantry, and removing all products containing wheat gluten. Mostly they were Purina products (cat and dog food). I know there has been no recall of their products. But considering that they started production of their pet food (many containing wheat gluten) in their new plant in China - after the poisoned food recall had started, makes me distrust them. I'm going to become a real label reader. I'll bet there will be a bunch of us blocking grocery store aisles! Sorry to talk so long...
Prayers and all the best to Sam, your Dad and you,
Sue and my Kids
Nikki, Buster, and Shadow, the kitties and Sparky, the dog

Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
I have a question?
Hills Science Diet said that they were offering to pay because of the M/D prescription diet right?
Ok so why on their website do they say "FEED WITH CONFIDENCE" wheat gluten free. Guaranteed?
Also American Made MEANS all parts are made in America, if the wheat gluten wasnt then it is all american made? (this is just my opinion on what american made means not sure what the law is when stating american made though)
I Like hills and am a nutritional consultant for them as well so this will be something I cal them about Monday and ask them.

Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
Mamaof4soon, those are very good questions. I might think putting that "wheat gluten free" notation on the sacks was a mistake. I had been told by my vet and other sources that none of the dry Hills prescription food have wheat gluten in them except the "M/D". Those sacks should have been put aside so that label wasn't put on them.
I can testify that Hills did pay for the testing. Dr. Sharon had a bunch of forms to fill out for each cat.
Now that "all parts made in America" seems wrong - if not downright lying!
That's great that you are a nutritional consultant for Hills! You can find out the real truth about that one. It's nice to have someone on the cat board with knowledge on nutrition!
Please keep us posted, Mamaof4soon. Oops, I mean Mamaof5now!

Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
Ok well I have some info. YES Hills Science Diet IS wheat gluten free.
The Prescription Diet is M/D is not but is in the process of being made that way. The wheat gluten was bought was from an outside source but manufactured in the USA so yes it is American made. There arent many wheat gluten plants in the US they are mostly in Europe. Sort of like the parts of an American Made car, sometimes not all parts and peices are from here but they are put together in america.
This particular time they used this one place for their M/D line and will not be using it again obviously. I do not know when the M/D will be made without wheat gluten but for now it needs to be so it binds properly. They are working on that so they can have all of their product lines state 100% wheat gluten free and not just the science diet line.
I was glad I called because I was so curious about it.
Hope this helps anyone who is interested.

Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
Just a short post.... I can do it!
I just got a call from the Vet Tech at my vet's office. The M/D test results came back, and my kitties, Nikki, Buster and Shadow, were negative for all 3. What a relief!
Ferrana, how is Sam doing? Have his electrolytes and kidney function enzyme levels come down more? I'll continue to send prayers to him and your family until you post some good news. Pulling for you, Sam!
Mamaof4soon, I hope I didn't offend you with my new nickname for you in my last post! Did you find anything out from Hills?
Prayers for the sweet, innocent victims of this awful situation and for the grieving families left behind

Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
Thank you for your kind words about my kitties. I feel like "Woooo hooo" myself! It seems like forever that I've been worried about this - waiting for the test appointment, waiting for the results, etc. I truly feel so bad for the families who lost their beloved babies - it's heartbreaking to lose them to natural disease, old age or accident - but poisoning! I would have a very hard time dealing with that! Prayers for all of them - probably more for the families,as the babies are romping at the "Rainbow Bridge".
I do hope we hear about Sam soon and that it's good news!
Mamaof4now, that was quite a typo wasn't it? Really would be some big changes in your family! So you're not ready for another one of any of these yet?
Just giving you a hard time... Enjoy your wonderful family!

Sue that was so funny! My kids are ds12(he's my oh my did i do that kid), ds4(is hell yeah i did that and what are you doing to do about it), dd2yr 8months is such a mama type but such a brute at the same time she cried from the moment she was born and hasnt stopped yet LOL, then there is dd9months she is just a dream she is the one that tricks you into having more, she just absorbs everything and watches everything so not sure what she'll be like yet since most of the good kids tend to be the ones that just dont get caught ehem like um me!
Yeah i think loosing a pet to something like that would be so traumatic, I feel so bad for the people who have had to deal with that.
Still praying for sam, any news anyone?
