Please keep us posted as to how Sam is doing. Maybe since he's young and strong, he'll pull through. Our fingers (and paws) are crossed..

Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
Ferrana, I am so very sorry to hear about your parents' sick kitty, Sam. I will say prayers that Sam will recover. As anneryan says, Sam is a young kitty and that will be an advantage for him. It's unfortunate that your Dad's birthday was today too and that he is so ill himself. It must be devastating for him to have this happen to Sam.
I'm taking my 3 kitties in to the vet on Friday, because they had eaten the Hills M/D dry food too. I managed to find a receipt for the food, but if you can't, I'll bet the vet's office can find it on their computer.
The Hills rep came to my vet's office a couple of days ago and said Hills has a new testing program now. Like I said in an earlier post, I don't know what their criteria is, but my kitties' tests are going to be paid in full by Hills. If they are trying to build good will, maybe Hills can be persuaded to help with Sam's vet bills (besides the tests).
Your sister should not blame herself for this. As the other posters have said before and I know from personal experience with one of my "angel kitties", cats are experts at hiding their illnesses. By the time you realize it (even if you live with and are close to your cat), it is getting to the crisis stage.
That's why I'm taking my kitties in. They seem perfectly well now, but who knows what could be happening that I can't see yet? I'm grateful that we can test now and if there is anything, deal with it early on.
I know how your sister feels, though. I was only supposed to feed the M/D to one kitty, who had a blood test showing high glucose levels. I told the vet that I didn't want to shut Buster away from the other kitties for 2 months (when his next test was). She told me that it wouldn't hurt anything if the other two ate some too, since all the cats are all about the same age. So after hearing about the recall, I was so upset with myself, thinking I should have isolated Buster and then I'd only have one potentially sick cat instead of three! (My kitties' pictures are on page 8 of this topic if you care to look.) If so, you can see why I love them so much, that the last three days, I have forced myself to try not to think about it. But I haven't slept well any of those nights.
This probably isn't nice, but I wish they would not only put that wheat gluten plant in China out of business, but tear down or burn the building!
Please do keep us posted how Sam is doing. Prayers and loving thoughts for the "big guy". Your family has suffered enough - Sam deserves to live.

Well, the news is better this morning. Sam was "bright and alert" when the vets first saw him, so that's a good sign. His electrolyte and kidney function numbers keep going down, though still high, so again...a good sign. I'll keep you posted!

Latest news is Sam's numbers keep dropping and he might go home today. The biggest concern is whether or not the kidney damage is permanent; if so, then his numbers will start to climb again when they take him off the IVs. They told us the same thing when Mija was poisoned by the lilies, and though her numbers took a while to normalize, they did in time. Hopefully Sam will have the same luck.
Thing is, now we're not sure it was poisoned cat food. According to the vet, he sure is exhibiting every symptom that would be in keeping with that, but apparently he wasn't on the w/d formula after all, just the "mature cat" Science Diet formula. We're all confused. My parents have no plants in the house (I was maybe thinking since Easter just passed, maybe he, too, had lily poisoning), and it *does* seem consistent with the massive food recall.
So...yikes. He might be the case that expands the recall.
I'll see if I can find a pic of Sam around here to post in the meanwhile.
Edited to add: I can't believe this--not a single pic of Sam the Wonderkitty on this computer. Apparently all my pix of him are from my pre-digital-camera days. Sorry! Next time I visit I'll be sure to get some shots to share with y'all.

Ferrana, what wonderful news that Sam's kidney function and electrolytes have gone down! His future sounds very promising.
I'm sure the news must have really cheered your Dad up. (He needs to have something to go his way!
Prayers will continue for Sam. Thanks for reporting back and we appreciate your sending any further updates!
I take my kitties in for their tests in about an hour. I am a nervous wreck! Please wish for good test results on my 3 kitties who ate Hills dry M/D.
You go, Sam!

Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
I think you need to make sure that ALL chemicals even ones you think are ok like vinigar(yes some people think it's ok for their cat to drink it ) and ALL house plants that you can not identify as purely safe OUT OUT OUT of that house. IF you have lillies wether they are in or outside take them down and use round up on them if they are outside. and DO NOT have them buy the cut ones at the store to look nice in the home. It is just no good to have them at all when there are cats around. If you dont know for sure if they will be able to do it then you go down there and help them clean up any wires and stuff that is a hazard. Ehem ehem cough cough cough ....while your there dont forget your camera and get some pics. Ya know since you were already going to be there helping out.
Prayers still for Sam and for Nikki, Buster and shadow too!
