Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
Howdy all. I haven't been around in ages (my cats have been very healthy), but unfortunately it looks like my parents' wonderful flame point Siamese, Sam, has become a victim of the poisoned cat food.
He's in the vet hospital now on IVs and antibiotics, but he's in end stage renal failure and has severe electrolyte imbalances. He did acknowledge and recognize my parents when they visited him (they had left on vacation and came home when my sister said she'd taken him to the vet hospital), but he's in bad shape. It doesn't look good, though they're doing everything for him they can.
Thing that stinks is they don't have any of the old food (he was on Science Diet m/d). They just ran out of it last week and bought a new bag of a different type (m/d is off the shelves) maybe 4-5 days ago, so they can't prove to Hill pet foods that it was definitively that food. The vet is going to turn Sam's case in to them, anyway, and maybe my parents will get a break with the vet bills at least.
My dad has Parkinson's and is in bad shape himself, and is very bonded to this giant lovable lug. Dad is devastated. Worse, today is Dad's birthday.
This just plain sucks. Our hearts go out to anyone else dealing with the same thing.

oh how sad....prayers for Sam that he will have a turnaround while in hospital...please keep us posted...

I'm so sorry to hear of this...what a tragedy this whole thing is. It does seem though that the Vet must it on his computer that they have bought the food, and could print up another receipt for it, whether there is any left or not.

I am so sorry to hear this news. Dad must be so upset. Please tell him we say happy birthday and I will pray for a healthy kitty to come out of this.
My Hyperthyroidism is acting up but feeling a bit better since on my medicine.
Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
Prayers for Sam and for your Dad. I, too, hope that the vet can do something to turn Sam around.
Thank you all for your well wishes and sympathies. Having the vet print up a new receipt is an excellent thought. It never occurred to me; my cats are on Science Diet foods you can buy in pet stores, so I had it in my mind that my parents were out of luck. But m/d has to be bought in the vet's office, so maybe there's some hope at least from that angle.
My sister is very upset with herself. She lives with my parents to help care for my father, so she feels she should have noticed Sam's distress earlier. That, and when she first heard about the recall she checked her cat's food to make sure she was safe (she is)...it never occurred to her to check Sam's. They put all the cat food in a plastic container and toss the bag, so it was easy to forget what he had or just plain not think about it.
I reassured her she did nothing wrong and that her noticing Sam's distress and taking him to the vet makes her a hero in this. She felt bad that she noticed so late, but I told her in my experience cats are so stoic you often don't know something's wrong until it's almost too late. Our elderly cat who suffered a stroke hid and slept in a room, wasting away, and just two years ago my Mija was poisoned by plants (we think, never did figure it out for sure--that's what brought me to these forums the first time) and it took a few days to realize something was wrong with her. In those cases, just like with Sam, the cats' illnesses weren't discovered until they were almost dead.
I'll keep you all posted. Poor Sam. Mom said on the xray his bladder was huge--nearly half his abdomen!--and that when they catheterized him it was all blood at first. It's clear fluids now, at least, but yikes. How horrible for such a great kitty! He's a BIG cat--25lbs or so--and he's down to 19lbs and change now. Oof. He's a young 'un too, just about 6 years old. Hopefully his youth will help him win this battle.

cotinuing paryers for Sam and family....I was going to say the same about cats hiding their pain until it is almost too late....if you do not know them VERY well, it is easy to not notice...and sometimes even when you DO know them well...it is not your sister's fault and she has to get tht thoght from her head...

Also if they used a credit card or check that is proof as well. Your sister IS A HERO. The only asses(sorry) are the ones who tainted the food or new it was tainted and let it ship anyway. the only thing to do is pray now and that is what we will do for you. Keep us updated, the good and the bad if it comes to that.
Make sure you tell your sister how special she is for helping out with your parents. I am sure the stress doesnt help her thinking she could have avoided this but there was no way. You are all so warm and caring with animals, i'll keep fingers crossed
