Ulcerated Cornea
Hello. I have 13 year old Corgi-mix named Teddie. About 3 weeks ago, I noticed that her eye was red. Im not sure if she injured or what. It got better but still was watery. Then I noticed something white on her eye. I took her to a vet on Saturday and he said she had an ulcerated cornea and it needed to be looked at by a Veterinary opthamologist. He said she might due one or another type of procedure on her that should save her eye. He said she needed to get in immediately. In the meantime, he gave us an antibiotic ointment to put in her eye 4 times a day. I was able to get an appointment for tomorrow morning. Teddie has has some liver issues and has biopsies done. Nothing was determined to be a cause but her liver enzymes have remained elevated. She has not shown any other symptoms. I'm deeply worried about them putting her under to have any procedures done. I was wondering if any of you had any experience with an ulcerated cornea. Thanks so much!

Sorry to hear about Teddie's eye...I do not have experience with an older dog being put under sedation, however if the vet does preliminary testing to determine that Teddie is healthy and strong enough, then I would think it is okay....
Are you doing anything about the elevated liver enzymes?...
please let us know what the outcome of this next visit results are...

just for kicks , I went to an eye seminar years ago and one of the weirdesst things I learned was that you can take a soft contact lens...doesn
't matter what strength or even one about to be thrown away..sterilize it and place it over the ulcer...I did the proceedure twice and it worked fine,,,the ulcer healeed in about ten day...of course antibiotics were used...you might suggest this to your vet and he will think you an idiot or that I am an idiot...which nmight be true--but it is worth a try before surgery is done,,,
This was not a fly by night meeting but a three day meeting strictly about eyes with wsome pretty famous vet opthalmologirtse...let me know the response...it should be goood------but it does work

Re: Ulcerated Cornea
just wiped this oneout...but there are several other procedures that work and can be done under local anesthesia and light sedation...suturing the nictitans (third eyelid) over the lesion,k,,,suturing the sclera (white of the eye) over the lesion...these can be done underl light sedation and local anesthetic.. I used to do them with the owner present to pet the dog and talk to it will I was doing the suruting...problem with this thou=gh is that two clients passed out and were worthlesw as far as help

Re: Ulcerated Cornea
My cat had an Ulcerated Cornea; they sewed his eye lids closed for about 2 weeks. Gave some eye ointment and he was fine. I understand your concern with the sedation. From what I understand, anesthesia has come a long way. When my dog was neutered, they had him on a fancy venelator and heart monitor. Way different from the old days. My co-worker stuck her Christmas tree in her eye, she ulcerated her cornea and they put the contact lens thing in. I guess in humans, you can’t sew their eyes shut.
I would compare it to cutting his foot. You would have to put him under sedation to sew that up.
