I wondered if treats would be next...the have a very high amount of wheat and I never liked giving them to my cats on a regular basis but I do have them on hand and would give them to Gizmo when I gave him is thyroid meds. Guess I'm going to have to start making my own treats too.

Hill's Pet Nutrition recalls Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food
OMG! I'm rather scared right now but maybe I don't have a reason to be. About 2 months ago, my Buster was suspected as having diabetes and was given this to eat. I mixed it in with the IAMS House Cat dry food, but it was mostly the M/D. Now he is eating Hills Prescription L/D because he might have a liver problem. All this was due to one general test my vet does before using anesthesia (it was for a dental appointment).

I know 2 months is a long time ago, but could any of the toxins have been in this food earlier? (Who knows exactly when it started?) Could Buster have pancreatic damage from the M/D? Or am I just getting paranoid? He seems fine now.

I have been feeding my three kitties the dry Iams all through this. And the other two cats, Nikki and Shadow, could have sneaked a little of the M/D food, but not much. Like you say, it is a very frightening feeling when you don't know what is safe to feed your babies, when even the treats are tainted!

I have one dog, too - Sparky. I've looked at the lists but just to be safe, has anyone seen Pedigree canned dog food or Friskies canned cat food on any list (in case I missed something?)?

These people are  evil. I probably shouldn't say this on the forum, but if I caught them, they would be forced to eat a dinner with certain extra ingredients. NOTE: Moderators, if I'm out of line, go ahead and delete this paragraph. I just had to say it or explode! Image

I'd appreciate any input you might have.

Many prayers for the kitties and doggy who died from this attrocity and for their heartbroken families. It is devastating to lose a pet due to natural causes or an accident, but to lose one to these monsters must be almost unbearable! May the little angels get extra special care at the Rainbow Bridge.

Sue....I understand exactly how you feel. It will take a long time (and maybe never) for the commercial pet food industry to gain my confidence again. I just feel bad that I let others make me feel like I was doing something bad by feeding a homemade diet at one time. I find it particularly upsetting that in Hill's first press release they said explicitly that no prescription diets were involved and it took them almost 10 days to recall the m/d because it contained the wheat gluten. Shouldn't they know which products contained it?

You can go to their website and find the product code on the food involved. They said it was produced in a 2 month period of early 2007, so you might want to check. You should find that page here:

http://www.hillspet.com/menu_foods/md_R ... _en_US.htm

I don't think any Friskies products were on the list...and according to the website:

Friskies® is not affected by the Alpo® Prime Cuts in Gravy canned dog food voluntary national recall or the Menu foods recall. Please click here for more information. http://www.friskies.com/

I am not sure about Pedigree food and the Waltham website says nothing.... http://www.waltham.com/brands.htm
You may want to check over in the canine forum.

Hang in there...if anything maybe this will give the pet food companies pause about the ingredients in the food (although I somehow doubt it...sorry for the pessamism...sigh)

Oh, Tina! That's exactly the time period that Buster ate the M/D and my other kitties got into his bowl periodically. And they ate it all! I threw the bag away - didn't think a thing about it. I don't know how much of this type of prescription food my vet sells. If it's very little (which I doubt), she might have a sack in stock and they could look up when it was purchased. If Buster ate it during January of this year, the vet may have purchased it last year.

Thanks, though, for giving me the links so I can check on the Pedigree canned dog food and the Friskies canned cat food.

Sadly, I feel the same as you, Tina. They don't give a darn about the poor animals or their owners - all that matters is the almighty dollar. I did hear that several owners who lost pets are thinking of joining together to begin a much larger lawsuit against Menu Foods. This would make it a much "higher profile" than a bunch of little ones! I don't think the pet food companies will change anything they're doing but they are going to have a lot of negative publicity for a long time. I hope the lawsuit causes Menu foods to go out of business!

The trouble is, that someone else will just take their place! If the situation wasn't so sad, you could sure "have the last laugh" at all the people who gave you a hard time about cooking for your cats.

You and your kitties, take care.

Here is a good link for recalls and info. It seems to be kept very up-to-date and thorough. Bookmark it if you like it, before it gets lost in this thread.

Debbie, Is there something wrong with my computer or my eyes? I can't see the link to the info about the new Purina pet food facility in China!

OMG... I can't believe these companies! I think we should boycott their pet food! It sounds like a good time to put trade restrictions on China, starting with pet food! Image

Our dog and kitties get a few table scraps at suppertime. I used to tell my hubby that this practice wasn't good for them - that the "brand name" pet food had all the vitamins and minerals they need. Now I think they're better off with the table scraps - at least they're not poisoned! Now to find how to get the proper vitamins and minerals in there for each species!

Thanks for the link, Marty. I've been looking at all of them mentioned here and I will bookmark yours and check it frequently.

ATTENTION:

I will not be posting this again.

Debbie, the site you posted is inaccurate. By propogating the inaccuracy on this particular site (or any other outside source), you are in fact, compounding the situation by causing confusion and worry to pet owners thinking their dry pet foods are amoung the list of recalled pet food. It is obvious the site in particular has an agenda against pet food manufacturers. Anecdotal reports ARE NOT EVIDENCE and they are propogating MISINFORMATION.

Be responsible, people, and use the sources provided you by individual manufacturers and the FDA's site, as I posted in the "Notes" thread.

Please stop propogating information that has NOT been substantiated!!

This isn't just a warning to any particular poster, it applies to ALL posters who continue to link to sites that contain unsubstantiated information.
