STILL ANOTHER PET FOOD WARNING

Okay, realistically... Iams and Eukanuba are supposed to be the gold standard for pet food, right? But now they're involved in both of these recalls. What the **** is safe to feed my cat?? I want her to have the best, just like everyone else wants their pets to have the best, but if what we previously thought is the best is turning out to cause... freaking tumors and genetic mutations...?!?!?!... what are we supposed to be feeding them??
I feel so frustrated I want to cry. I don't understand this. And I don't know what to do.

STILL ANOTHER PET FOOD WARNING
============================Iams warned about food for overweight pets
1:15 AM
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday it has issued a warning letter to Iams Co. that says some of its diet pet foods contain an unapproved substance.
Eukanuba Veterinary Diets Optimum Weight Control/Canine dry, Optimum Weight Control/Feline dry, Restricted-Calorie/Canine dry and canned, and Restricted-Calorie/Feline dry and canned contain chromium tripicolinate, which is not an approved food supplement, the FDA said.
The warning follows a recall of nearly 100 brands of pet food made by Menu Foods after animals suffered kidney failure. That recall included some Iams products made under contract by Menu Foods.
New York state's food laboratory last week identified aminopterin as the likely culprit in that recall, which involved "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food.
The new warning letter urged Iams to remove chromium tripicolinate from the products but did not ask for a recall.
In 1996, the FDA said it would not block the use of low levels of chromium tripicolinate as a source of supplemental chromium in diets for pigs. But that did not apply to other animal food. Chromium can affect the metabolism of glucose in animals.
Iams requested that that decision concerning swine be extended to its products for overweight pets, but FDA said it denied the request. It said a 2006 letter from Iams did not contain sufficient information to address safety concerns.
Iams will remove the ingredient from its Veterinary Diets cat and dog food, spokesman Kurt Iverson said. The products are sold by prescription only for overweight pets. They have used chromium tripicolinate as a metabolism enhancer, Iverson said.
The letter is part of an "ongoing dialog" with the FDA, Iverson said.
The FDA considers chromium tripicolinate to be genotoxic, meaning it can damage DNA and cause mutations and tumors.
The letter was dated Jan. 8 and posted on the FDA's Web site Thursday

Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
So much for the whole "Iams and SD are the best" IMO this tells me that they don't regulate what goes into their foods and use lowest quality at times. Sorry if I sound harsh, but I'm very upset by this. I still believe very strongly this is very likely what may have happened to Frodo. My only reasoning as to why Willow and Gizmo did not get sick is because Frodo was older and possibly more susceptible. I just don't know. I hit our local co-op today and bought some Organix brand dry food. I'm very close to figuring out how to make my own diet for my cats. One article I read said anecdotal evidence suggests that hundreds or maybe even thousands of pets have died due to this contamination. So sad...so very sad and it makes me so angry

My hubby son and I were discussing this lastnight and my 16 year old son also suggested that we might be better off making our own foods for our critters...
it is definitely something to consider and research more with all that is happening with available foods for them...

Re: ALL POSTS RE: PET FOOD RECALL GO HERE IN THIS THREAD
I just read on another forum that some "Pounce" treats have been recalled. I think they are made by Del Monte, so check their web-site for exact details.

Yep, it is on the delmonte.com website (up at the top). They have also recalled several types of dog treats, so check carefully if you have a dog too.
