I'm with you Cleo, it makes you wonder. The food I have sitting in my pantry right now is Iams, but not any that are on the list, however, I still feel leery of feeding it to my cats and haven't since I heard this. I mean what will be next? I'm about ready to start doing a homemade diet, but I know how controversial those can be...then again Iams and Hills were suppose to be safe and healthy for our animals. I'll be honest, I've never quite trusted what they put in our pet food....the recalls lately only give me more reason to pause.

I'm curious what was wrong with the wheat gluten in the food that caused problems in some cats? My first thought was some toxin got into the food...I'm am waiting to hear more, I want more details.

Everyone wants details, especially those who have lost pets. There's almost certain to be a class-action lawsuit coming, so hopefully those details will be made public. It's up to the companies to earn back our trust, so it's in their best interest to let the consumers know the truth, and how they're going to keep the problem from happening again.

oh I know....I have not been online for a couple of days and heard about this lastnight...
thankfully all of ours only get dry kibble....but my mom feeds the canned foods to her dogs and cat....keeping a close eye on them for sure!!!

TinaB....oh I cannot imagine how you must be feeling and worrying and wondering...but please do not....easier said than done I know...but nothing can be done to change things now...except contact the company if you can confirm anything and see if they are willing to make ammends of some sort...it won't bring Frodo back, but at least they will have owned up to what happened...

I bought a bunch of the Iams meat and gravy for my cats as a treat a while ago. I am so thankful that I kept forgetting to give it to them! They have had maybe two cans for the four cats and they seem fine. I am a little scared to keep feeding them their dry food. The whole situation makes me nervous! I am almost agreeing with Tina, if I made my own food I would know what goes into it.

9-Lives and Meow Mix are okay

I just received an email from Del Monte, stating that all their pet food products are not affected by the recent recall. They make 9-Lives and Meow Mix. I've also written to Mars (Master Foods) regarding dog foods such as Caser and Pedigree, and Whiskas

So should we switch to either one to be on the safe side? Occassionally I give my cats Fancy Feast Gourmet Medleys. More than one vet has said it's the equivalent to McDonald's ... i.e. junk food. I don't think Fancy Feast was on that list we're they? Who puts them out? Gotta check.

That's what I had always heard about Fancy Feast Cleo...we always called it "crack for cats", but it was always the standby for cats that wouldn't eat. Never failed, they would eat FF. I always looked at ingredients and tried to use the ones that had meat, not meat by products, as #1 ingredient. Don't recall what FF had or why most consider it "junk food"

I just wanted to thank you all for keeping everyone updated about this unfolding frightening recall.

Tina, my heart goes out to you about sweet Frodo...

Added: Fancy Feast is made by Purina and it's safe so far. Caz gets a small can a day...yes...I'm guilty of feeding him "crack". It started when Smokey needed to take Tumil K and it was the only food that he would eat that covered the taste.

I've posted the link from the Purina site that states it's voluntarily recalling Mighty Dog but no other Purina products are affected.

I guess my problem is I have no proof that I fed my cats any of the foods that were recalled. I know for a fact that I would on occasion by the Iams in pouches, but don't remember the last time I did. It could have been since December, it may have been prior to December, I just don't know. Neither of my other cats got sick so I tend to think the food had nothing to do with Frodo's renal failure...but in the back of my mind, I just can't help but wonder since it came on so acutely. Gizmo and Willow aren't liking it right now, but I am only feeding dry food.

Every once in a while we would give one of our cats the Nutro pouch as a treat. I'd say he probably had 8 pouches since December? Would this be enough to hurt him? I wonder how much causes damage, whether it is an everyday feeding, or a feeding at all. Has anyone heard?
