Help with my gsd

Post by mamaof4soon »

In short story form......(i hope)...

Just a little history, 4 year old male, intact(dont get mad), working gsd, very freindly loves everyone but trained as well. He does not bark for anything in my house at all.. My 5 yr old male does the barking(alpha over the 4 yr old kinda thing) so 4yr old doesnt bark unless there is some sort of trouble or a kid is doing somethig in that room he/she shouldnt be. He has been known to have UTI's and whines a certain way to go out, we know the whine means he is in pain or thought it was that. He whines and then we take him out at like what ever hour he does it. He doesnt fuss or make a mess in his cage or cause any problems or anything you could think of. HE is the PERFECT dog I swear, (not like my other one  lol). OK well he is in the mudroom where many years ago we had a Dalmation in there and he chewed up the wall it was a couple years later we figured it was mice he heard and went nuts. It was the only thing that made sense at the time. Well Sgt. (his name) whined the other day at about 1am  I thought UTI at first but he didnt need to go out, i thought he was thirsty so forced water on his(he isnt a great drinker to begin with but I make him) that didnt work. I had to sleep on teh couch inthe next room to yell at him to shut the hell up(i was upset at this point) and he shut up and didnt say another sound at all.

Well the next night he did the same thing so i figured let me yell first and seeif he stops if he truely has to go out he'll whine the rest of the night. So i yelled to stop(a command I use and yelled it to him) and he shut up. NOthing more was done.
But the next night he did the same thing and I yelled it and then yelled it again then had to come out into the room and tell him quiet he shut up and that was it. I know for a fact that if that dog had to go he wouldnt have shut up no matter how much alpha he knows I am.

So again he did it last night, i took him out late and he didnt need to go so i figured it's not uti but what the heck is it! He is scheduled next week for his routine yearly with a temporary vet who is taking over for the vet whos son passed away. The older vet is doing sort of ok but very upset still over the loss of his son. I never met the new dr. but the Tech I know has been around for years(30 yrs tech) and I trust her and will be with her as well.

Could this be that the mice are in the basement again?

We have a cat we'll call him Fred, he is a stray, I never knew he lived under my deck before this winter. We always saw him but thought he wa a female pregnant. Big mouser and I never fed it at all. I just thought it the neighbors cat that came over here. But he isnt a female he is a big old tomcat and healthy i might add. I dont bother him and he doesnt bother us. I found out he lived under the porch wehn i saw footprints in the snow and every morning at 8am he goes and he comes back later. he cant get into the house from tehre but i bet the mice do and maybe he drives the dog nuts. Like it use to with the dalmation.

I have no clue, maybe i should put the cage into the kitchen and see if he does it tonight. I'm waiting for morning to get urine sample to bring over to vet's office so they can run a UA and send it outlab as well. I would rather be safe than sorry.

Anyone had this problem with mice driving dog nuts? I feel dumb but traps arent keeping them out of the basement cuz of the cold and I do see the cat catching them. There is just so many out there. This is farmland so we always get it but i think maybe this year there are so many that the dog can hear them. jeez i dont know.

Ok I took Sgt into the dining room last night and he fussed for just a second due to the other dog I have but for the most part I didnt hear a word out of him except for the occasional stretch. O thank God I got some sleep, I have a party to go to today with all the kids  early too  . I'll see how it goes tonight. I'm not moving him back in the mudroom he's staying in the dining room for now till i figure if this is really mice he is hearing.

The telling factor is when you say he whines, as opposed to barks. Whining usually indicates worry, stress, pain, attention-seeking and sometimes, alarm.

Since he has a history of UTI's, the best thing would be to get him evaluated by your vet, and I wouldn't wait on this. Don't just take a urine sample, call the vet and get an appointment for a full exam, and possibly bloodwork. It's always better to play it safe.

If you know you have mice, then it would probably be best to investigate where they are coming in (your basement?), and close off those areas for good. (just be sure you don't trap a kitty in there, though)

I think you're doing ok by letting him sleep outside of the mudroom, and if the behavior doesn't continue, then he may in fact, be curious about the mudroom and possibility of mice. But, play it safe and rule out health problems first.

my mom's 2 doxies are notorious for sniffing out a mouse and "worrying" all night long at the cabinet or furniture it might be under....

if a mouse gets into her old farmhouse....she gets no sleep until it is caught one way or the other....

but yeah....I would rule out the UTI first then go from there....

good luck!

I am keeping him in the dining room again tonight. The mudroom is just in the other room but it is far enough away juts in case it is the mice. dang mice if it is them. The new vet wont be able to see him until next saturday(appt already made for sure), so I still have to get the urine sample in there to be sent outlab/ and inlab. they did say if he does have a uti the new vet will see him asap. I told them that is fine with me because if he does and she wont, I'll go somewhere else for this. I sure hope it isnt a UTI , his urine doesnt smell skunky(it does when he has one, but have no idea why). But doesnt mean he doesnt have one.

Traci- It deffinately is a whine from him. Like what you said, pain, stress stuff like that. Maybe if it is mice , he is stressed that he hears them but cant go after them? Could be i guess. O wait I almost forgot to tell you if I havent already, he doesnt whine AT ALL during the day. Dont forget I stay at home all day so i can hear him if he would whine. It's only at night,.......ewwwwwwwww I hope its not mice....

O and deffinately if it is we will make sure "fred" is not around when we figure out where they are coming in and close it up. "Fred" has never done anything to us and doesnt bother us at all, he eats mice and has been around for years. I feel he's protected this house from many mice I"m sure throughout the years so he can stay as long as he wants.

Something I just thought of though, If "fred" has lived under my deck why dont the snakes bother him? We get the garder snakes every March that hatch out and crawl everywhere, just love seeing those little heads all over my lawn, 50-100 at a time they crawl over my feet and dont bother ya. but wow maybe fred stays away during march. LOL Fasinating to think of what really goes on out there when we sleep. hmmmmmm

I wouldnt touch "fred" but I would do everything we know to make sure we didnt disturb what ever he is in under there.

I'll update in the morning how pup did tonight.

thanks for info.

Garder snakes usually stay well hidden in foliage througout the day. They probably won't bother Fred unless he antagonizes them, which is doubtful. Other snakes, however, most snake bites and attacks are dangerous for pets!

Since your dog only seems to whine at night, it's very possible there are mice he hears. But, you know your home best, maybe you could listen between the walls, or something?

Ok well again last night he didnt fuss. I'm happy to know it might not be a UTI (which I am still going to have a UA on him anyway) but upset that the cold has those mice in that area and driving him nuts. Poor pup. I"ll have dh set traps and look to see where they might be coming in. We'll look tomorrow after we know Fred is gone.

Good to know that the garder snakes wont bother fred. Funny how animals in the wild can leave eachother alone and live near eachother without bothing eachother. Yet most humans cant  .

I am going to put dog back in mudroom tonight and seeif he does the whining again. If he does all assume it's mice and bring him back in and then try to fix the problem before letting him back in there. Mudroom is right next to where I sit and type in the kitchen. A door is really the only thing that says it's a different room but guess mice like being right under there. we'll see

I know how annoying that can be. We had something in the crawlspace ductwork a while back...we were having a squirrel problem in the attic at about the same time. So I don't know if it was a squirrel, rat or mouse, but it drove Biscotti bonkers. She spent hours barking at the heating vent, so I was going bonkers in return! Guess it finally died...

Ok Sgt. slept in regular mudroom, last night and he didnt whine at all. So only thing we can assume is that it was warmer yesterday and the mice werent over in that area. Or 'Fred' got em' ! I'll see what happens tonight.
