How to stop dogs from chasing cats?

Post by gurl2005bby »

I have 2 puppies(teddy and gidget) they are 9 months old and one adult dog (Kiki)which she a 1 1/2 years old but puppies are afraid of trouble cuz trouble will use claws at them and hiss at them and Kiki (adult) is more playful then puppies and like to play with cats but kiki tend to chase my cats and i do yell at kiki when she do that. how do i train the dogs to respect the cats? I thought you yell at dogs to stop it that would make them to respect the cats and also leave the cats alone? Most of the time dogs leave my cats alone i do know teddy wouldnt come near trouble he is scared of her. It mostly Kiki bothering them since she is so hyper. I had to bring the cats food and water up where the dogs would not able to eat it cuz dogs tend to like cats foods more then their food.

Dogs can't chase a cat that won't run. Are you sure the cats aren't taunting them? Most animals that live together find a way to play together, and chasing each other is often one of the fun things they do together. If the cats are really upset the dogs will know. If the cats bite or scratch, even the dumbest dog catches on eventually.

Keeping the cat food away from the dogs is a good idea. I guess some dogs can be trained not to eat what isn't theirs, but, most dogs will eat cat food if they can get to it and it isn't good for them.

I found a few links for you to check out, they should help. Notice the common problem: dog chases due to prey instinct. Dogs have a "pack" mentality, so when there are multiple dogs in the home, you have to take extreme measures to ensure the cats are always safe and protected. During training, and even long after, the important thing is protecting the cats from harm....never leave your dogs and cats unattended without having them seperated safely. If you're comitted, training can be successful. The time is now to train the pups, and the adult dog, it's not too late for her to learn. If you're still at your parent's home, ask them to help and to be consistent with the training measures, just as you are. There's nothing that spells out failure moreso when one person works hard to train and someone else does something different or changes the methods. It's important for all of you to be involved.

We have labradors on one side who go crazy when they see our cats and an african lion dog cross on the other side who visits every couple of days. She is the most relaxed dog in the world and doesn´t pay any attention to the cats in the house (she used to live with 2) so they don´t mind her. Some breeds of dog are more excitable I guess. A cat will naturally fear a strange dog in case it isn´t friendly but if our cats were to panic and run, the placid dog from next door would probably react by chasing.
