From Interceptor to Heartguard?

Post by Dan-O »

We've got a new dog in our home, a rescue, and he is on the heartworm preventative Interceptor. My other dog is on Heartguard and that's what I have in the house. Can I switch the new guy from Interceptor to Heartguard just like that? I do have the right size/weight dosage for him. Thanks!

This would be best asked of your vet, so he can examine your new dog, test him, weigh him appropriately, and make the appropriate determination for heartworm preventative based on the above as well as age, health, breed, etc.

Funny thing, but I was just going to ask the same thing, only switching the other way around.

Buffy was just tested for heartworm and given all her vax before her flight, and I was told she would be due for Heartguard next week, but I had gotten Winnie's Interceptor refilled not too long ago an I can't use it for Biscotti or Java. She is so very timid that I have been holding off a traumatic visit to the Vet until she is more comfortable with us. We're making progress, so it should be soon. If she were a rescue and I didn't know her health history, I would not have hesitated to get her there.

I think I'd ask your vet, Marty, and you want her examined by your own vet anyway. If she's been on heartgaurd all this time, she should probably stay on heartgaurd, because chances are, she has tolerated it well. Don't wait though, not good to skip regular heartworm on the days she is accustomed to.
